Message from Jude+

Dear Family and Friends of St. Francis - We are approaching the second Sunday of Lent, and I pray that you are experiencing a holy Lent. This Sunday, we are blessed to have our own Peter Marshall as our preacher. The service will be live streamed as always, but the sermon will be inserted as a recording because Peter is at the back of the church during the service working the sound. I asked him if he could just sprint in his alb from the back of the church to the altar, but both he and Susan said that was not a good idea!

Lenten Series
Beginning today, the first of the videos for our Lenten Series is available!!! You can find the link in this enews, and also on the website. The video is an hour long and is entitled “And So It Begins,” and you can watch it whenever and as often as you like. Dr. Bill Creasy will introduce us to Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem which begins The Road to the Cross. Dr. Creasy will use extensive maps as well as famous paintings to illustrate the lesson.

THEN, on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:00 pm is the zoom forum with myself and Dr. Creasy to discuss the lesson together. The zoom link is also in this enews and will be on the reminder eblast tomorrow. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to meet and study with Bill.

Lenten Series - The Road to the Cross
Dr. Bill Creasy will lead us through the last days of Jesus, from his entrance into Jerusalem to his crucifixion on the cross. Six video presentations will be followed by four live 90 minute zoom discussions with Jude+ and Dr. Creasy. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet and discuss the most profound moments in our walk of faith with someone who has devoted his life to bringing the fruits of his study, travel and teaching to students all over the world. Please email or text me just to give me a heads up that you will be participating, but there is no requirement to register!

I have known Bill for over forty years. When I met him, he was an English professor at UCLA and also taught a course called “5 Years Through the Bible” at various churches on the Westside of Los Angeles. I met him because I taught with his wife, Lynetter, and taught both their sons, Adam and Jonathan. Knowing very little about the Bible, I decided to attend his classes at St. Monica’s church in Santa Monica, and it was life changing. I credit Bill with being one of the influences that led me back to church, and ultimately into the priesthood.

Bill grew up in coal country in Pennsylvania, served in the marine corps for 6 years, returned to school, converted to Catholicism, and eventually earned his Phd. in English, learning Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic along the way. He was a professor at UCLA for 30 years. He is also an accomplished scuba diver and mountaineer, among other things! His full bio is below.

The series is open to all, and you do not need to register, but it would be helpful if you could let me know if you are planning to attend, just so I can get some idea about it. Tell your friends!!

I so look forward, with joy, to spending time with you in this study and reflection series.

And Here is Your Lent Devotional for 2021
For each of the last five years, the congregation and clergy of St. Francis have created a deeply personal daily guide for Lent. Each contribution is in response to the daily readings assigned by the Common Lectionary for the Lenten Season. The thoughtful reflections published in these booklets have been at the center of a Lenten practice for many in our community, and we hope that this year these writings will continue to challenge and inspire.
Help Habitat for Humanity as Part of your Lenten Practice
