November News from Impact100DC
Hello all,
With mid-November upon us, and Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’m thinking about why Impact100 DC means so much to me. I can sum up my reasons with three “Cs,” which are all powerful and motivating: connection, collaboration, community. These wonderful possibilities are available in abundance through membership in Impact100 DC.
Why now? The heroic work being done by the DC area nonprofit community is only going to become more critical in the years ahead. To add a fourth “C,” I am taking genuine comfort in doing something useful to support that work, and doing it with a group of great women whose values align with mine.
I’m not alone. Here are reasons our members have been giving at our fall Meet and Greets for getting and staying involved:
- The magnified aspect of each $1,000 contribution when it is combined into a high-impact grant
- The opportunity for hands-on participation in the philanthropic process
- Participating in a well-run, professional volunteer organization
- The multi-faceted educational opportunities:
- Learning about needs in the DC-area community
- Learning more about the work of many organizations addressing those needs
- Learning about and participating in the grant review process
- Learning from the expertise and experience of other women
- Leadership opportunities
- The opportunity to share experience and expertise
- This awesome community of women: open, friendly, interesting, inspiring, diverse, and fun

Grantee News: City Gate - 2022 Impact Grantee
City Gate received a two-year Impact grant in 2022 and was able to leverage it to obtain AmeriCorps funding. With our funding and the AmeriCorps volunteers, they were able to:
- Increase the total of students served
- Provide daily tutoring for some students
- Extend their tutoring to 35 weeks to cover the school year, and into a 5-week summer program
- Do the majority of their tutoring with individual students instead of in small groups
This resulted in growth at every level in the Payne School fifth-grade classes in the two-year grant period, including an average gain for all students of 2.7 years of progress in a single school year. In both grant years 1 and 2, City Gate tutors focused on working with students needing the most help to overcome grade level deficits. The remarkable progress achieved in both of the last two school years demonstrates that the achievement gap can be closed, even for students who are multiple grade levels behind.
City Gate leadership shared: “the two-year Impact grant kept us on track and on target despite numerous challenges, enabled us to overcome stumbles, adapt to changing circumstances and some staff turnover, rise to meet the challenges embodied by our students, and to continue learning and modifying our program to achieve optimum success. Our Impact100 grant was a key factor in sustaining efforts to adapt and continue tutoring in the community-based setting.”

Connection Corner: Impact100 DC Member Gatherings
Every fall, we look for ways to bring more prospective members into the fold—not only so we can expand our impact in the coming year but also so we can get to know each other more, and take advantage of the brilliant, diverse, engaged community of women that is Impact100 DC.
A huge thank you to everyone who hosted a Meet and Greet event this fall, including Elisa Joseph Anders, Jenna Boig, Martha Coven, Bonnie Harkness, and Heller An Shapiro. It was great to see so many members and friends over the last few months!
