Hello Friends,

The WSKG Education team was thrilled to receive the 2025 Serving New York Award from the New York State Broadcasters Association for WSKG’s “Be My Neighbor Day” event in March of this year.

WSKG Director of Education, Brieanna Moreno, noted in the submission, “We’re especially proud to have hosted our first-ever Be My Neighbor Day at the station—an incredible success. The event brought together over 30 community partners who offered crafts, resources, and valuable information to parents, caregivers, and children. With free haircuts, face painting, hands-on activities, and refreshments, the day was filled with joy and connection. More than 400 attendees joined us, making it a truly memorable and impactful celebration of community.”

We believe in teamwork that makes a difference. Tell us how we can team up with your school, library, or education partners in the region. Contact us today at education@wskg.org.

Catch up with Marley Vavra, WSKG's Early Learning Coordinator and some of her popular classroom activities you can do in school or at home.

Science Lava Lamps

This month I kicked off outreach with all Binghamton City School District 2nd grade classrooms, and we had so much fun learning that anyone can be a scientist! Together, we made hypotheses, worked as a team, and created homemade lava lamps. Many students were expecting an explosion, but were pleasantly surprised by the cool effect we saw when we added colored vinegar into the baking soda and oil. With just a few simple ingredients that most families already have at home, students discovered they too can be scientists. 🔬✨

Weather Hunters Library Visit

I recently visited the Southeast Steuben County Library just in time for the first day of Fall—and it couldn’t have been more perfect for our activity! Together we watched an episode of PBS KIDS’ brand-new show Weather Hunters called “The Leaf Planter.” In this story, the Weather Hunters explore how leaves and the environment are connected, making it the perfect seasonal tie-in. 🍂

After the episode, the kids enjoyed several hands-on activities, including a color-by-leaf project. This quick and simple activity is great for keeping little hands busy while still offering an educational touch. A wonderful way to welcome Fall with both fun and learning!
