Dear Friends,
A century ago on August 1, 1920, Joyce Robena Bagget, my mother, was born in Dublin, Georgia. She knew hardship from a very early age. Her mother passed away when she was just a year and a half old, which made for a difficult early life. This only made her more determined to provide a happy, healthy, and successful upbringing for her five children.
Joyce truly lived a life of service. She was always a room mother, a den mother, a team mother, and was a Sunday School teacher for twenty years. She was president of the grammar school and high school PTA for many years. Later in life, she was a poll worker (my father liked to call her a “polecat”). She served for many years on the Atlanta Board of Education’s Civil Service Board and, in this capacity, became close friends with Atlanta civil rights leader and CSB Chair Dr. Robert Brisbane.
While she never finished college herself, she knew the value of education. Like my father, she always demanded our best efforts in school. She greeted everyone with a smile, but she never shied away from an argument. She was full of compassion but never let that get in the way of getting the job done. She insisted on the highest standards of conduct from us and taught us the importance of grit, honesty, and resilience.
It's easy right now to get swept up in fear, to lash out, or to forget the standards and ideals we hold for ourselves. It's in difficult times like these, however, that we fall back on the values that our parents instilled in us: honesty and fairness, perseverance and grit, compassion and respect. Happy 100th birthday, mom. We miss you.

Reimposed Filing Deadlines
|
The most recent extension of Georgia's statewide judicial emergency reimposed deadlines that had been stalled since the initial order took effect back in March. Working to reduce the backlog of cases once the Courts are fully back in session, this order reinstated deadlines and statutes of limitations tolled between March 14th and July 14th. We're hopeful this will help keep cases moving, even while many of us still work remotely.

Remembering John Lewis: Civil Rights Leader and Congressman
|
Lewis’ central role in the civil rights movement put an end to his pulpit dreams. But his moral clarity and unwavering commitment to nonviolence and the “beloved community” – a democracy of racial, social and economic equality – infused every chapter of his life. It also earned him the respect of a nation that early-on feared his presence.
Lewis, who played a 60-year, outsized role on America’s stage, from organizing lunch-counter sit-ins to becoming the face of political resistance to President Donald Trump, died Friday after a battle with cancer, his office confirmed. He was 80 years old.
