Lessons from Wildlife

“Wildlife doesn’t get enough love. Everyone likes the cute, cuddly animals because most people don’t understand birds or snakes,” says 15-year-old Green Chimneys student Tome. “I’m more curious about things I don’t fully understand." Animal-handling can provide a calming sensory experience, and a great awareness of self. Such interactions, particularly with wildlife, help students to practice patience, emotional regulation and trust. This ability to slow down and stay mindful are at the core of the coping skills that Green Chimneys students are building for themselves.

Whole Family Support

How a family spends time together, interacts with each other, and manages problems that arise is an important part of functioning, both individually and collectively. As part of its support services and resources to youth and families across Putnam County, Green Chimneys' Community-Based Services offers counseling and group work with families to improve communication, foster understanding, and facilitate positive changes. Skilled therapists guide structured collaborative discussions and activities to help families strengthen relationship skills, address identified conflicts and challenges, and improve their home environment and interactions together.
