Upcoming Literary Class

Lessons in Chemistry from Page to Screen

Monday, December 11 • 1:00pm-2:15pm • OnlineCourse 12075 • $30

Readers of the novel Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus have been awaiting the adapted Apple TV+ television series, that has now debuted. In this informative, interactive class, learn about the new dramatic series and the process by which producers, screenwriters, set designers, and actors adapted the best-selling book into a TV series starring Brie Larson as the scientist and cooking-show host Elizabeth Zott. Inspired by the author’s frustrations with sexism in the workplace, Lessons in Chemistry blends imaginative storytelling and historical research into chemistry, cooking, family life, and American popular culture in the 1960s. Explore different opinions about the show's merits and limitations in contrast to the novel. Beyond its value as media entertainment, also ponder the extent to which the frustrations, ideals, and achievements of this formidable fictional heroine still resonate for viewers today. One of the show’s producers, Natalie Sandy, will be participating in the discussion.

The discussion will be recorded and distributed to enrolled students for up to one week of viewing post-lecture. Register in advance to receive the video, even if you are unable to attend the live session.
