Remembrance Day poppies
November 2019
Lest we forget
Ahead of the holiday pre-season, Durham Tourism would like to take a few moments to reflect, remember and honour the brave and dedicated Canadians who have fought for the freedom that we enjoy today. This November 11, ceremonies will take place across Durham Region honouring Canada’s veterans. Visit your local municipality’s website for Remembrance Day ceremonies in your area.

There’s always more to explore on our events calendar at DurhamTourism.ca, and on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter channels.

Sensory kit for arena
Enjoy TCC events in greater comfort
Spectra, operators of the Tribute Communities Centre, is helping guests with autism, dementia or traumatic brain injuries to enjoy events in greater comfort with the creation of Sensory Kits to be distributed during all events at the venue. The visual or auditory environment at the arena can be overwhelming for these guests, due to the bright lights and loud noises. Each kit contains: a small drawstring bag; a pair of noise reducing earmuffs and ear plugs; a pair of anti-glare glasses; a “fidget” toy; communication cards that allow nonverbal guests to communicate their mood and needs; an identification wristband (this can note the family’s location and contact number in the case of confusion or separation); a venue map outlining the main gates, family restrooms and elevators; and an event schedule (as available).

“Sensory Kits are important as it allows families to make memories and have experiences like everyone else,” stated Gail Smith, Spectra’s Assistant Ticketing Manager and Accessibility Coordinator at the Tribute Communities Centre. “Our Sensory Kits will make attending our events easier if guests know in advance a kit is ready and waiting for them to use.”

The sensory kits will help to provide guests with the best fan experience in Oshawa, and come on the heels of other recent accessibility projects: including the reconstruction of Red Tilson Lane; the new antenna for Hearing Assistance Devices; and Tribute Community Centre’s new website, scheduled to launch in 2020. The free Sensory Kits can be reserved online.

Durham Adaptive Sport Collective
Continuing a Paramazing Legacy
Earlier this year, Durham Region played host to the 2019 Ontario Parasport Games. One of the legacies of hosting the games is the creation of the Durham Adaptive Sport Collective (DASC). The purpose of the DASC is to grow opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the benefits of participation in sport. The group held its first meeting in October and two sub-committees were established to begin working on a Parasport Festival and Online Catalogue. Residents and organizations interested in volunteering with the collective are encouraged to contact Lori Talling, the Region’s Sport Tourism Co-ordinator at [email protected] or 905-668-4113 ext. 2608, for more information.

On November 16, local teachers and community program leaders will be at All Saints Catholic Secondary School to compete in the Rotary Club of Whitby ParaSport Festival, organized by ParaSport Ontario. Participants will be guided through five stations by National and Provincial Para Athletes. The day will conclude by 2 p.m. with the presentation of the Rotary Club of Whitby Cup. Volunteers are needed and individuals can register and be placed on a team.
