There is only one person I wanted to discuss this week.
She’s long overdue.
I had my moment in the sun at the NYC Marathon, and she did, too...even though she didn’t run it.
“They let Carrie talk! A LOT! Mostly to Shalane but still it was terrific!”
a friend texted. Sure, it’s progress and sure, I’m grateful...
It’s hard to be grateful for a seat at the table when you’re handed scraps.
Poor coverage is an ongoing issue in women’s sports. The
Mary Cain video series
that rocked the running world this week was produced by the NYT Opinion section, not the sports section. The (amazing!)
NYT weekly Running newsletter
is, too. As usual,
I don’t hate the player I hate the game
. I have to wonder how much better coverage of women’s sports would be if we had truly engaged women running newsrooms and major networks, if the men onscreen would be as excited to engage with Carrie as Shalane was.
I am hoping that these ladies will be recognized as a bright spot in otherwise very bad coverage, that this will get Carrie the respect and in turn the airtime she deserves, that this will change the way at least major marathons are presented, proving that YES they can be as engaging as figure skating. At the same time, many of us know all too well that there’s no such thing as ‘too good to be ignored’. It’s time to talk about, “too toxic to be competent’. THAT conversation is much more likely to bring real change at the top.
As for you, you don’t have to earn our attention. Not here, not ever. We will not let you be ignored. If you are being overlooked elsewhere,
you aren’t crazy
. Your moment in the sun is coming, and I can't WAIT to see you shine.
You are Coached. You are Loved. And you ARE #winningatlife

Over on the blog and Mantrapod, Coach MK is starting some Shady B*tch Lessons to help those of use who spend our holidays in hell! Each lesson, no joke, draws on something she learned in Charm School that helps her navigate passive-aggressive situations in her daily life.
If you could use a lesson or have a suggestion, click here and
email Coach MK!
Coach MK is making an effort to write a little more regularly in her 'CoachedandLoved" voice. The blog is a much more personal platform, so if that sounds interesting to you:

Two years in a row, NYC had ideal marathon conditions. It was absolutely perfect from start to finish, I got what I needed: a really GOOD race, so now I can start thinking about a GREAT race!
I needed one day, just ONE good day to feel like the past 3 years of crap were truly behind me. (check)
I needed to feel strong enough to start (check), in control enough to know I would finish (check), and energetic enough to sense I was holding back until reaching the final 10k of the race (check) so I could blow the doors off in the final miles (check). I had to walk, but not because I made a tactical error; I chose to listen to my body and am PROUD of that choice.
