Let There Be Light!

As we turn our clocks back this week and the dark of night descends earlier, take comfort that one family's dilemma was made lighter and brighter by the work of Yachad and our partners.

The T. family inherited their Southeast D.C. home in 2007. When they moved in, Mr. T. set out to complete many home renovation tasks himself. Recently, however, both he and his wife have had serious health challenges making it difficult to continue and keep up with repairs. As the family's health care costs rise, their financial resources are limited.

The family reached out to Yachad. Their electric panel was in need of urgent attention. Yached hired a licensed contractor to untangle and upgrade the panel. Thanks to support from some of our grant partners and smaller funders, including Hill Havurah and Machar, Yachad made possible the completion of all the electrical work and some roof repairs done at a fair market cost of $20,000.

With the updated and rewired electrical panel,  it was possible and safe to install new outlets and fixtures that brighten the home.

Congratulations to Shelterforce as it soon celebrates 50 years of empowering people to make real change in their communities by providing accurate and relevant information.

Shelterforce, began in 1975 as a “how-to” publication for tenant activists. Over the years the focus expanded and began to examine a wider range of place-based community-building issues.

Housing issues are dominating politics, the news cycle and our lives. Housing is impacted by climate change, affordability, zoning, and wealth creation Where you live matters to your health and well-being. It is essential to have good information in order to stay current and be a good advocate. We are grateful that Shelterforce is here to keep us well informed.

This year Yachad is participating in Giving Tuesday through our partnership with Spur Local (formerly Catalogue of Philanthropy). We hope you can play your part by participating in Give Local Together, the Greater Washington region's largest day of giving. This campaign brings people from across the DMV to show up for local nonprofits together.
