Support SWC Students Impacted by the Government Shutdown
The ongoing federal shutdown is affecting many Southwestern College students, making it harder to afford food and basic needs.
In our Spring 2025 survey, 47% of students reported food insecurity, and 51% said they couldn’t afford balanced meals. With delays in SNAP and CalFresh benefits, even more students are facing challenges.
Now is the time to step up and ensure our students have the support and stability they need to stay focused on their education.
💛 Every contribution helps!

“Due to the federal government shutdown, CalFresh (SNAP) benefits were delayed beginning November 1, impacting nearly 400,000 San Diegans and pausing approximately $73 million in CalFresh dollars that support our regional economy. As the largest hunger-relief organization in the county — and the countywide food safety net — the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank has been meeting this challenge head-on and is committed to ensuring continued access to food throughout the County.
Here’s how you can help! Visit their website to donate or host a virtual food drive. The San Diego Food Bank is able to stretch every dollar donated by purchasing food in bulk at special contracted prices. You can also volunteer for a direct and tangible impact.
If you or someone you know relies on CalFresh and needs assistance, visit the Food Bank’s Food Locator Map to find an upcoming food distribution near you.”
