CHDC Announces 2024 Robert Rettinger Memorial Scholarship Award Winners
On Tuesday, April 30, 2024, CHDC proudly awarded $1,000 Robert Rettinger Memorial Scholarships to two Boyertown Area High School Seniors. Both Lacie Hickman and Katharine Gundersen, pictured with Crystal McArthur, School Counselor, were selected based on their commitment to further their education and attend an accredited two or four-year college, vocational, or technical school in the healthcare field, exceeded the volunteer community service hour requirements, and submitted meaningful essays as to why they chose to further their education in community-based healthcare.
Lacie was accepted into the 3- year dual enrollment Nursing program at Reading Hospital School of Health Science and Katharine will be attending Rutgers University New Brunswick Honors College pursing neuroscience / pre-medicine. Both will begin their programs Fall 2024.
Robert Rettinger was a dedicated board member of Community Health & Dental Care, Inc. for over 12 years. Robert had a solid understanding of community needs and helped to shape CHDC into the organization it is today. Robert was an advocate of the work we do to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations CHDC serves throughout the Tri-County area and kept our healthcare movement going strong.

High Blood Pressure Education Month
CHDC Nurse Educator, Lauren Emmell, has an important message for High Blood Pressure Education Month! "High Blood Pressure is dangerous because often times people have no symptoms. Meanwhile, it is making your heart work too hard, and damaging the arteries that deliver blood to your brain, kidneys, eyes, and heart!" Did you know that eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, low fat dairy, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, and nuts can help lower your blood pressure?
Make sure to follow up with your CHDC provider for blood pressure checks and medication adjustments! To learn steps you can take to prevent and manage your blood pressure, Click Here.

Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month
Did you know that more than 27 million people in the U.S. have asthma & more than 100 million people in the U.S. experience various types of allergies each year? Awareness empowers individuals, families, and the community to save and improve lives.
What is Asthma?
- Asthma is a long-term disease that causes your airways to become swollen and inflamed, making it hard to breathe.
- There is no cure for asthma, but it can be managed and controlled.
What are Allergies?
- Allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases.
- An allergy occurs when the body's immune system sees a substance as harmful and overreacts to it.
Allergy and asthma control begins at home! Better air quality in your home, office, school and car can reduce allergy and asthma triggers. To learn how to control indoor allergens, Click Here.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month
Skin cancer is America's most common cancer with about 1 in 5 Americans developing it by the age of 70! Fortunately, it is also one of the most preventable cancers. Learning what to look for on your own skin gives you the power to detect cancer early when it’s easiest to cure. To further protect your skin, you can:
- Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.
- Cover up with a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
If you see any spots on your skin that are new, changing, or unusual then it's time to get checked! Find out if you are at risk for skin cancer - Click Here to Take the Quiz.

Healthy Vision Month
Taking care of your eyes is just as important as eating healthy and physical activity! To keep your eyes healthy an annual eye exam is needed. An eye exam can determine if you need contacts, glasses, or if you are in the early stages of an eye-related disease such as Glaucoma or Macular Degeneration.
How to Protect Your Vision?
- Get yearly comprehensive eye exams.
- Know your family's eye health history.
- Wash your hands before touching your eyes.
- Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun.
To learn more tips you can use to prevent vision loss, Click Here.
