September/October 2024

Hello Nicole,

As we enter September and October, we look forward to the vibrant colours of autumn and the warmth of community! As the leaves change and the air becomes crisp, we're excited to celebrate the beauty of the fall season with our Fall Harvest theme in this newsletter. In this edition, we have pulled together a variety of articles and activities inspired by the season. We'll also be emphasizing the theme of kindness, encouraging the children to practice empathy and generosity in their daily interactions.

In our agencies and care homes we continue to celebrate our 40th anniversary into the fall season with a number of events that remind us the importance of caring for one another. We are hosting a food drive within our homes during the week of September 30th and during the week of October 7th our little ones will be writing letters and cards to seniors. Keep looking at our socials to see the events and contests that the children and Providers can engage in and win!

In the homes, we are looking forward to the fall to welcome new children to our program of learning, growing, and celebrating together. We can’t wait to see how our children and Providers enjoy exploring the culture and cuisine of Indonesia and Nigeria as part of our Together Wee Can for September and October.

In the spirit of the season, we ask you also to celebrate and show your gratitude to our Home Visitors and all our childcare workers on October 24th – the official Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day. Wee Watch has over 70 Home Visitors who are Registered Early Childcare Educators – their role is to support and advise the Providers on programming and the implementation of all licensing regulations in their homes. They are an integral part of the Wee Watch family and we truly appreciate all they do!

Sincerely,

Lisa

Fall Into Kindness - Ways to Give Back this Fall

As the Fall season arrives, it's a great time for children to get involved in helping their community, the environment, and those around them. Small actions can make a big difference, and Fall is full of opportunities for kids to lend a hand and show they care. Here are some simple and fun ways for kids to make a positive impact this Autumn!

Fall is a busy time, and many people in the community might appreciate a little extra help. Encourage kids to volunteer at local food banks, help rake leaves for elderly neighbours or assist with local community events like Fall Festivals. These small acts of service can make a big difference in the lives of others.

Autumn is a season for gratitude and giving, especially as Thanksgiving approaches. Kids can get involved by organizing a food drive at school or in their community. Collecting non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, and rice to donate to a local food bank helps ensure that everyone can enjoy a warm meal.

As the weather cools down, many people may not have the warm clothing they need. Kids can help by organizing a clothing drive in their school or neighbourhood to collect coats, scarves, hats, and gloves for those in need. Donations can be given to local shelters or organizations that help families during the colder months.

As the leaves fall, so do other forms of litter that can harm the environment. Kids can take part in neighbourhood clean-up days to collect trash from parks, sidewalks, and nature trails. This helps keep the community clean and protects local wildlife from harmful waste.

Fall is the perfect time to plant trees or bulbs that will bloom in the spring. Kids can work with local environmental groups to plant trees or flowers in parks, schoolyards, or community gardens. This helps improve air quality and beautifies the environment for future generations.

Lastly, kindness is one of the simplest ways to make a difference. Encourage kids to show kindness to friends, family, and classmates by doing things like writing thoughtful notes, helping with chores, or offering to share toys. Even small gestures can create a ripple effect of kindness throughout their community.

By getting involved in these Fall activities, kids can make a real impact on their community and the world around them. Encouraging children to help others teaches them valuable life lessons about compassion, responsibility, and the importance of giving back—skills they will carry with them throughout their lives

Together Wee Can Read, Learn & Grow

Each year Wee Watch organizes exclusive and educational events and activities around a theme that all Providers across Ontario participate in called "Together Wee Can".

This years theme is Together Wee Can "Global Kids: Adventures in Culture & Cuisine".

Wee Watch has selected twelve countries to educate and engage the children in our homes each month with activities, games and cooking based on the unique experience of each country. The activities will help support the development of literacy, language, fine and gross motor skills as well as social and cognitive development. As Providers and children take this journey, they will explore local foods and popular culinary dishes each country has to offer.

Take a look at what's coming up in our homes...

Indonesia is in Southeast Asia and is a unique country because it is made up of over 17,000 islands! Indonesia has a varied geographical landscape with many volcanoes, mountains, valleys, plains, rivers, and lakes. Due to its location, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common. It is home to many unique and endangered animals, in fact, this is where the Komodo Dragon and Orangutan come from and the only place on earth where they live in the wild!

Nigeria is in West Africa and with over 214 million people that live there, it is the country with the most people in Africa. That is 5x more people than all of Canada! Due to its vast landscape, large population and range of languages spoken, Nigeria is often referred to as the ‘Giant of Africa.' In Nigeria there are more than 250 ethnic groups living in the country and over 500 languages spoken, with Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba being the most popular.
