September is always a season of new beginnings. As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, families naturally shift into fresh routines and renewed energy. For children, this time of year often feels full of possibility—a chance to try new things, build new skills, and continue their journey of growth. At Wee Watch, we are inspired each fall by the curiosity and resilience of the children in our care. Just as the leaves begin to change, children too are growing, adapting, and learning in ways that remind us of the beauty of each stage of development. Our Providers are here every step of the way, creating safe, nurturing, and engaging environments where children can flourish.
When reviewing this newsletter, I was struck by the fact that in Sept/Oct alone, we have 21 Providers across the province celebrating over 20 years with Wee Watch! What a testament to the commitment of our Providers, demonstrating that this service they provide in their communities is a true calling for them. Every newsletter, the pattern is similar and we couldn’t be more proud of our tenured and new Providers!
As we begin this new season together, let’s embrace the spirit of September—a time for fresh starts, new discoveries, and meaningful connections. Thank you for trusting us to be part of your child’s journey. We hope you enjoy the activities and tips collected for you in this newsletter!
Warm wishes,
Lisa

Back to Routine, Back to Wonder:
Finding Magic in Everyday Moments
| | |
As September begins, many families and Providers find themselves easing back into familiar routines. With summer adventures coming to a close and schedules becoming more structured, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we can make the most of these everyday routines, not just to provide comfort and consistency, but to spark learning, joy, and curiosity.
At Wee Watch, we know that routines are essential for children’s development. They provide a sense of security, help manage expectations, and support emotional regulation. Young children thrive when they can anticipate what comes next and feel confident navigating their day.
But structure doesn't mean losing the sense of wonder children experience so naturally. In fact, routines can fuel learning and discovery when we create space within them for questions, creativity, and connection. When a child puts on their shoes, helps set the table, or looks out the window during a quiet moment, they’re not just following directions, they’re exploring, absorbing, and learning in powerful ways.
Why Routines Matter
A predictable routine supports:
- Emotional well-being – Children feel secure when they know what to expect.
- Skill development – Repetition supports language, motor, and social skills.
- Independence – Children learn responsibility by participating in daily tasks.
- Transitions – A consistent schedule makes it easier to move between activities with less stress.
But just as importantly, routines create opportunities for connection. In early childhood, connection is the foundation of learning. Every time an adult slows down to engage a child with a question, a smile, or a shared activity, the child feels seen and supported and that emotional bond becomes the launching point for deeper learning.
Adding Wonder to the Everyday
There are countless ways to invite curiosity and engagement into daily routines.
Here are a few ideas:
-
Arrival time: Greet children with a question like, “What’s something you’re excited to do today?” to spark imagination.
-
Snack or mealtime: Talk about where food comes from, how it grows, or what it looks like in its natural state.
-
Clean-up time: Make it playful—sing songs, sort items by colour or shape, or ask questions like, “What’s the softest toy here?”
-
Outdoor time: Go on “wonder walks” and ask children what they see, hear, or smell.
Wonder Doesn't Require Extra Time—Just Intentional Moments
You don’t need to add extra activities to your day to make learning meaningful. By tuning into the natural curiosity children bring to every moment and by creating an environment where questions are welcomed you can turn even the simplest routine into a learning opportunity.
This Fall, as we return to structure and routine, let’s also return to wonder. Let’s remember that learning lives in both the big and small moments—and that every day brings a chance to inspire curiosity, foster connection, and support each child’s unique journey.

Each year Wee Watch organizes exclusive and educational events and activities around a theme that all Providers across Ontario participate in called "Together Wee Can".
Our Together Wee Can program is carefully thought out and planned with our Providers and children in mind. With a network of 1,400+ Providers, we thought why not go straight to the source, ask the experts, our Providers!
We wanted to collaborate to develop this year’s program, a program for our homes, created with our Providers. This year’s program, “Together Wee Can 2025 – A Provider Takeover”, is a compilation of some of our Providers favourite activities, activities their children love, encompassing all areas of development – fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, language/speech, social/emotional, sensory, and imaginative.

From problem-solving to creativity, memory, and attention, these skills lay the groundwork for future learning. | | | In October we will be engaging in Language and Speech Development! From talking and reading to singing and playing, everyday moments help children build vocabulary and clear communication. | | | |
