January/February 2024

Hello Nicole,

Happy New Year to our Wee Watch Family!!! We are looking forward to an amazing 2024! Did you know we now have over 6200 children in our care and 1200 childcare Providers?! We are very proud to be offering our high-quality childcare in many, many communities across Ontario and look forward to the year ahead.

In addition to our Wee Learn educational program that all children participate in, we are also excited to announce our 2024 Together Wee Can Program theme…. this year it is “Adventures in Culture and Cuisine”! Canada is known for its diversity, with citizens representing many different cultures and ethnicities and we are proud to say our Wee Watch homes mirror this diversity. The children along with their Providers, will explore the unique culture of a different country each month through activities, learning games, crafts and cooking! We will explore local foods and popular culinary dishes – broadening the palette of our young learners as they also practice math, cognitive, gross and fine motor skills!  Keep an eye on our Wee Watch Facebook page or Wee Watch Instagram page to see the children travel the world to Nigeria, Indonesia, New Zealand, Turkey, Finland and more!

This month in our newsletter, you will find some Tips to Start 2024 off in a positive way as well as winter friendly activities for children of all ages and stages!

Keep warm!

Lisa

Here's to Starting 2024 Off in a Good Way!

With the fun and excitement of the holiday season behind us, we begin to focus on the new year, which is always a time to reflect on the past and plan on the year ahead. How you start the new year can set the tone for the rest of the year. With that in mind, we have complied a list of tips for keeping positive and putting your best foot forward as we begin 2024.

Tip #1: Think of Intensions instead of ‘Resolutions’

Ignore the pressures to make resolutions that will most likely result in stress and guilt. Creating intensions and actively writing them down is a much more realistic approach to setting goals for yourself. Find things that work for you and your family. Find something that feels good and make it a part of your daily routine.

Tip #2: Give yourself a pat on the back.

Start the new year off with a list of all the things you achieved over the last year. From getting the kids through a whole year at school to spending more time outdoors as a family, you might be surprised how long that list is! If you find that this makes you feel better, this is an easy habit to take well into 2024. Set some time towards the end of each day or week to think about what went well or what you are grateful for. This habit can help boost your self-esteem and mood throughout the year. It could be as simple as the kids saying something funny, or you made a meal that everyone loved. The benefits of gratitude are plentiful – and scientifically proven. Practicing gratitude improves relationships, sleep, self-esteem, inner strength and both mental and physical health.

Tip #3: Discover a new hobby or join a new group

Between a hectic work schedule, children’s activities and the day-to-day hustle and bustle, it can be difficult to break out of your standard routine. However, it’s essential to carve out time for yourself to try new hobbies and identify new interests. Making a small commitment to trying something new will feel like a great accomplishment.

Joining a local baby or toddler group or a parent support group, is a great way for you and your kids to make new friends and expand your support network. Being able to speak with other moms and dads who are in the same boat can really help keep things in perspective.

Tip #4: Make sense of your space

Cleaning up your physical space does wonders for your head space. If the idea of a thorough deep clean sends you into a clutter-induced panic, break each organizing task down into 20-minute increments to start. Simply set a timer on your phone, plug into your favourite podcast, and start organizing. Do this a couple of times over the course of a few days and you’ll have a clean and tidy space before you know it.

Tip #5: Develop a new routine

If you’re feeling out of sorts, kick off the new year with a refreshed daily routine. Anything from a daily morning walk to a nightly phone call with a loved one is the perfect way to decompress before or after a busy day.

Together Wee Can Read, Learn & Grow

Each year Wee Watch organizes exclusive and educational events and activities around a theme that all Providers across Ontario participate in called "Together Wee Can".

This years theme is Together Wee Can "Global Kids: Adventures in Culture & Cuisine".

Wee Watch has selected twelve countries to educate and engage the children in our homes each month with activities, games and cooking based on the unique experience of each country. The activities will help support the development of literacy, language, fine and gross motor skills as well as social and cognitive development. As Providers and children take this journey, they will explore local foods and popular culinary dishes each country has to offer.

To learn more about our exclusive educational programming, visit our website.

Take a look at what's coming up in our homes...

We begin our journey in New Zealand, a country made up of two large islands in the Pacific Ocean. We will be exploring kiwis (originated in this country), sheep (more sheep than people here) local dances and wildlife.

In February we are exploring Switzerland, Europe’s smallest country. Switzerland is known for mountains, lakes, chocolate and cheese! We will try cheese fondue, making traditional Alpine hats, yodeling and making our own downhill skier game.

Kids Can Cook

Cooking with kids isn't just about recipes, it can be a delicious learning experience for everyone! Cooking encourages literacy skills, harnesses imagination, empowerment, and creativity.
