Does it feel like every time you turn around government is making changes that impact your business? Many small businesses and health care providers find that once they start their practice, government becomes a not so silent partner in how they do business. A partner that makes decisions that often do not take the impact to your business into account. YOU CAN CHANGE THIS!
We also need to make sure Denturists are poised to WIN on issues in the Legislature. We do this by helping to elect people who would vote on denturists issues as you would vote if you were elected. In 2025 we are going to be working on:
- Refining insurance issues to ensure denturists inclusion in networks per the 2022 law
- Making state Medicaid work better for patients and continuing to work for increasing reimbursements
Helping better connect the high school and secondary education programs to the denturist workforce to increase the number of denturists in the state.
Before the Election on November 6th - In the Next Few Weeks
With elections coming up in a few weeks it is important for your business that you do the following:
- First and foremost – VOTE and get your friends and family to VOTE!! Every vote does count and makes a difference. It’s the easiest thing you can do to have impact on who is making decisions for your business and what
-
Get to know who is running your state legislative district (some districts have changed). Every legislative district has two state Representatives and a state Senator. These people will impact your business much more than any federal elected officials – including the President of the United States. Both of your state Representatives are up for election this year and about half of the state’s Senators. To find out your district, simply go to the LEG District Finder and type in your home address. Then to find out who is running your district this year.
- Identify a candidate you would like to see elected and help them get elected. One way to build relationships with elected officials is to help them get elected in the first place. You can easily do this by donating money to their campaign, attending events they are holding, or even hosting an event so they can meet your friends and neighbors. Every candidate has a website with information on how to donate, contact them to host events or volunteer in other ways. Go to that website and get the information to help them out.
Once the Elections are Over
After November 6th, WDA will be working to ensure that state legislators are educated about denturists and what denturists do for patients as part of our state’s community dental providers.
You can help by inviting your legislators to meeting with you!
Meeting with your legislators is the best way to help them get to know you, your business, what you do for your community, and what you need from legislators. Let WDA know that you are willing to get to know your legislators and we will work to help you get this done. You can do the following:
- Invite them to visit your business. This is the best way to engage with your legislators. Let them see your practice, meet your employees and get to know what denturists do.
- Ask them to meet over coffee. This is also a good way to get to know your legislators in district and present them with the issues importat to denturists.
- Come to Olympia during the WDA Day at the Capitol. Participation in this event shows legislators that you are paying attention to what they are doing. It also shows that you are willing to sacrifice time and money in your business to help provide them information at a time when they need that information to make decisions.
Keep It Going Over the Year
In 2025 and 2026, you will be receiving requests to contribute to the Washington Denturist Political Action Committee (WDPAC). This is a request that should not be ignored. Instead it should be viewed as a key investment in the success and survival of your business – since politics and government oversee everything your business does. The WDPAC is the easiest way for you to get involved in what government is doing.
WDPAC builds WDA’s voice in the political process and helps our industry maintain a strong voice as the Legislature and other elected officials debate bills that will impact your industry and your business.
Most health care provider groups have PACs and many of them are very well-funded – particularly the Dentists. While WDA may not be able to get to the $300,000 plus of the Washington State Dental Association’s PAC, we can get to an amount that will enable us to help elect Denturist supporters. The more Denturist supporters are elected, the easier it will be to get the insurance changes and other protections needed to keep Denturists as a vital and valuable health care provider in Washington state!
Writing a check is the easiest form of political action there is – and it can have the most impact when combined through a political action committee to help elect people who would vote as you would vote if you were in Olympia!
So please write that check! Strong political action — through in-district calls and letters to legislators, effective lobbying in Olympia, and a commitment to the election process through the political action committee– is the trifecta that will ensure Denturism is an industry that will survive and thrive in Washington state!
