Practice Makes Perfect

Summer vacation, what summer vacation!

Other than a two week period during the summer, better known as “the dead period” our Serra athlete’s don’t get any time off. The only break they’ve received this summer is from the weather, SO FAR!

Girls Volleyball

Girls Volleyball is practicing 3 hours daily. Two hours on the court and one hour in the weight room. When school starts, an hour of practice will be dedicated to study time for our student athletes.

Coach Shawn Goodner began his coaching career in 2016 and joined Serra High School in the spring of 2025, bringing a passionate, player-focused approach to the girls volleyball program. With a background in both indoor and beach volleyball, he has competed at the collegiate and professional levels—including representing Team USA on the collegiate beach volleyball team in 2022—and continues to compete at both levels throughout Southern California.

In addition to coaching at the club and high school levels, Coach Goodner is dedicated to developing high-character student-athletes through discipline, hard work, and a deep love for the game. His coaching and playing career includes several notable achievements, including a Trinity League Title, a CIF Championship, and three national championships as a player.

Cheer Squad

The Serra Cheer Squad is out every day practicing their death defying routines. That’s what it takes to stay sharp and to maintain their standing as one of the top squads in California.

Dejanae Gore (Girls Cheer - Head Coach)

Coach Gore brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the sport of cheerleading. She began cheering at the age of three and continued through college, transitioning into coaching in 2010. Coach Dejanae was a member of the varsity cheer team at Lakewood High School and later served as captain of her team at Langston University. In 2018, she led her team to their first-ever Grand Championship and has since earned numerous first-place trophies. Her areas of expertise include stunting, gymnastics, and choreography.

Through Alumni Phil Esparza ’73 generosity, the Cheer Squad was able to purchase two much needed speakers to help keep their timing impeccable!

Flag Football

The Lady Cav’s Flag Football Team enters their 3rd year of competition. This year’s biggest change is the number of student athletes that have come out to play. We now have a varsity and junior varsity team. It’s a great sight, seeing the boys football team sharing the football field with the Lady Cav’s.

The strength of our team is due to the nationally renowned Coach Monique Adams and her coaching staff. Not to mention the weight room workouts.

THE SOUTHBAY KICKOFF CLASSIC

For the next two years, Serra will kickoff their season lining up against Palos Verdes High School. Each game will be played at El Camino College. This exciting game is being billed as the “South Bay Kickoff Classic.”

Last year, the Sea Kings won state in division 2-A. While the Cavaliers lost in the quarter finals in division 2. To say the obvious would be silly, but I will anyway.

“THIS GAME PROMISES TO BE AS EXCITING AS PASSING YOUR DRIVERS TEST ON YOUR FIRST TRY!”

Call a friend or two and start making plans to attend.

Scott Altenberg has been at Junípero Serra High School since 1994.

“I am very proud of what we do at Serra. A successful program requires not only great student-athletes and quality coaching, but also dedicated supporters.”

Academically, Serra sends 100% of its students to college. Athletically, the school has a rich tradition of CIF championships, Division I scholarships, and has been blessed to produce a number of NFL players (Ranked 4th Nationally).

Sports Medicine

Trying to keep all these active student athletes healthy and on the field and court, are 18 student trainers, led by Mayar Ruiz.

They tape players

They ice players

They help stretch players with cramps

They help injured players off the field

They’re there to help hydrate and keep our athletes safe

Athletic Director

Serra High School is happy to announce that Mr. Artis Perry Jr. is now the school’s new Athletic Director.  Mr. Perry began coaching at Serra High School in 2010 and has served as our Head Baseball Coach since 2021. He has also been our on campus Athletic Trainer since 2010. “Good Luck Mr. A.J. Perry.

75 Year Celebration

"Cavalier Corner"

Honoring Our Legacy, Securing Our Future

75 for 75: Celebrating the Stories That Shaped Us

In honor of Junípero Serra High School’s 75th Anniversary, we are proud to launch "Cavalier Corner"—a yearlong storytelling campaign celebrating the moments, memories, and milestones that define the Serra experience.

Through Cavalier Corner, we’ll take a journey through time—from the farm fields that once surrounded our campus to the vibrant school community we are today.

We invite our alumni, faculty, and staff to share their stories—whether they’re big events or small moments that left a lasting impact (Send to jcormier@la-serrahs.org). Each story is a reminder that the Serra Family has always been, and always will be, a community built on connection.

Follow along as we share these treasured memories right here, offering a joyful trip down memory lane.

Together, let’s honor 75 years of Faith, Family, and Love—one story at a time.

August 13th our students return to school with the addition of the Class of 2029.

Please welcome our new Cavaliers!

Cavaliers have faith and integrity.
Cavaliers are humble and accountable.
Cavaliers are scholars who lead and serve.
Cavaliers are soldiers for Christ.
We are Cavaliers.
All Hail!
Sincerely,

Joe Cormier '81
