Moss-Gathering

by Theodore Roethke

To loosen with all ten fingers held wide and limber

And lift up a patch, dark-green, the kind for lining cemetery baskets,

Thick and cushiony, like an old-fashioned doormat,

The crumbling small hollow sticks on the underside mixed with roots,

And wintergreen berries and leaves still stuck to the top, —

That was moss-gathering.

But something always went out of me when I dug loose those carpets

Of green, or plunged to my elbows in the spongy yellowish moss of the marshes:

And afterwards I always felt mean, jogging back over the logging road,

As if I had broken the natural order of things in that swampland;

Disturbed some rhythm, old and of vast importance,

By pulling off flesh from the living planet;

As if I had committed, against the whole scheme of life, a desecration.

Welcome New and Renewing Members

We've had a great membership turnout this year! Welcome and thank you to the 45 families who have joined the CSCA this fall. If you indicated that you're interested in volunteering, look for an email from membership chair, Monica Payson, this week, if you haven't already gotten one. We'd love your support in any way you can give it, but please do all consider serving on the board. Our board is depleted and top heavy with senior parents. We need a refresh. We'll tell you more at the family meeting on Thu and in upcoming issues of the Dragon's Fire.

You Can Join Anytime

You can join the CSCA anytime during the school year by going to our membership platform. If you have trouble with the renewal form online, try launching the form in a different browser. If that doesn't work, please don't give up. Contact membership chair, Monica Payson, at monica@paysley.net for help. Or join the old fashioned way by sending in a paper membership form.

Ms. Neel’s classroom snack box is almost empty! Help keep it stocked with nutritious foods for TCS students! Shop via the Amazon classroom wish list with requested snack boxes. Running Start

Schedule Changes This Week

Running Start students, please note the schedule changes this week due to the school day PSAT/SAT on Wed and Center Field Day on Thu.

Planning for Winter Quarter

Hard as it is to believe, it's time to start planning for winter quarter. Make sure your student checks the course catalogue through CTC Link to plan winter courses. They will need to fill out and submit to Ms Hayes the Enrollment Verification Form (have your student check with their college's RS office for the form) listing the courses they plan to take next quarter. Your student must submit the signed (by Ms Hayes) form to their RS office to unlock registration. Encourage your student to register for classes as soon as possible after registration begins in order to ensure enrollment in the classes they need and want.
