HCSO Newsletter #46 | Let's Have a Great 2020
Message from Sheriff Ed Gonzalez:

As we welcome in the New Year and look back at 2019, a grim reality continues to plague our county. Death on our highways and streets is still a critical issue that we must continue to address. While we anticipate a 15 percent reduction in traffic deaths we handled in 2019 compared to the year before, we still have a lot of work to do. I’m proud of our hard-working traffic and DWI deputies that are committed to serving Harris County and doing everything they can to protect our communities. Below, you can read more about the major problem we all face on the roadways, and what we've done at the Sheriff's Office to try and combat it.

As the Houston Chronicle notes, in unincorporated Harris County, we also saw a drop in DWI-related fatalities in 2019 compared to 2018. While the ultimate goal is total elimination of these fatalities, the numbers do look better than in the past. This week, our deputies partnered with local law enforcement partners for a joint initiative to crack down on impaired drivers during New Year’s Eve. These initiatives and other strategic approaches will help us achieve even lower DWI related fatalities in 2020.

Let’s keep making significant strides as an agency — I’m encouraged by all of you, my teammates, and the commitment you have to serving the residents of Harris County. Let’s have a great 2020 — God bless you, and God bless the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
