“EVEN THE SMALLEST ACT OF SERVICE, THE SIMPLEST ACT OF KINDNESS,
IS A WAY TO HONOR THOSE WE LOST, A WAY TO RECLAIM
THAT SPIRIT OF UNITY THAT FOLLOWED 9/11.”
- President Barack Obama
“Kindness is the language which the hard of hearing can hear and the visually impaired can see.” - Mark Twain.
Almost 8 billion people walk the earth, each uniquely different and yet the same. All of us moving on this journey called life. Being kind to one another, then becomes a powerful impetus. Kindness a universal belief of all religions, a language understood by every living creature. It demands no expenditure of time or material, nor dictates a grand gesture. An offering of a simple smile, a kind word, an understanding ear, a meal to one who maybe hungry, a coat to one who is cold, standing up for the defenseless, a prayer for the one climbing through life’s obstacles. It is looking for the good in others. Even when it is inconvenient. Simply put it is making one’s day better, brighten it even if for a moment. It is to remind ourselves and others, it’s the little things in life that turn out to matter the most. A reminder that we are all connected.
Neuroscience has shown us kindness the greatest source of endorphin release - the feel-good chemicals. In bestowing kindness on another we are awarded with chemicals that boost our well-being and happiness. A small way each one of us can spread happiness. To others and to ourselves. Rekindle faith in our shared humanity. While individually this act of kindness may not ping off any significance, I believe collectively we can heal together. An just maybe the world within and around us.
