One of the first things we do when meeting with new clients is walk through their customer experience with fresh eyes. We’re scanning for overlooked marketing opportunities. It’s sort of like playing “hide and seek.” At Mad 4 Marketing, we’ve become pros at discovering the great ideas that are hiding in plain sight.

And surprisingly, it’s often the smallest moments that make the biggest impact.

This isn’t when we audit your website or dig into your reputation. This is more intuitive, more casual. We’re taking off our agency hats—and looking at your company just like a new customer would. Then…we put those hats back on, analyze, and get to work.

Here are a few examples of the steps we might take, and the hidden gems they’ve revealed:

  1. Google your company. We want to see how easy you are to find. Pro tip: Clear your cache or go incognito. Google will show you items relevant to your search history, which means that your own business is likely to show up higher for you than it will for others. And consider: Aside from your business name, what were some of the immediate search terms that came to mind? Write those down, because that might be something we can target with future SEO and GEO efforts.
  2. Walk around your business address or storefront. This could be a customer’s first impression, so what does it say about you? Would someone driving by know exactly what you do? Does your brand come through before the front door even opens?
  3. Call your own main lines. What is the greeting like? What is the hold music like? What are wait times like? These are meaningful elements of the customer experience—plus, they’re opportunities for you to subtly reinforce the way that you want your products and services to make your customers feel.
  4. Think about the routine ways you reach out. If your contact page kicks back an auto-reply email, we can start with that. If you send appointment reminders or “come back to your shopping cart” messages, we want to refine those so each one is an opportunity to strengthen your brand identity—not just a generic exchange of information.

These are just a few of the things we peek into when taking on new clients and considering the complete marketing picture.

Let's get something out of the way right up front: No, we're not suggesting you copy another company's logo, website, or clever tagline. We’re not going to tell you to poach their employees or their customers. We haven’t been at the top of our game for almost 35 years by copying others, and we’d never recommend that approach to anyone else... Read more.
