It appears there are two men in Saul's family named Mephibosheth. The first is a son of Jonathan, the second, a brother of Jonathan. Sadly, the elder Mephibosheth's father King Saul, attacked a group named the Gibeonites years earlier. The Gibeonites had not forgotten. David, in order to keep the peace, handed Saul's remaining children over to the Gibeonites at harvest time in order to bring justice and end the drought. God never commanded David to do this.

It was time for David to quit fighting in war. David was putting the lives of his men in jeopardy by trying to do something he could no longer do. Spiritually speaking, there are times we need to recognize our dreams will never come to fruition. However, God has not wasted our prayers, our sacrifices and our pain. God often fulfills our dreams in the years and generations that come after us. A great way to know when it's time to retire a dream is to listen to the people who love you the most and watch the circumstances around you. God will make His will obvious.

There are some challenges that never go away. Goliath's brother shows back up in the life of David. The text doesn't say if David's soldiers feared Goliath's brother or whether they had confidence because of David's previous defeat of Goliath. We do know one thing though, Goliath's brother died that day by the sword of David's army. Many of our enemies will show back up throughout our lifetime, but with prayer we can confidently know God will destroy them the second time the way He did the first time.

Read Psalm 146, sung by David as a prayer to God. As you read this Psalm, pray it the way David did.
