We're still looking for the currently cat-less person out there who can offer our late artist friend Arlia Almond's Kino a loving, one-cat home. All he needs is an empty lap and an indoor spot to curl up for a day of napping and nature gazing. He has several years of experience living with an artist, reader, and fellow napper, and will bring his own toys and dishes. Email Julie Lounibos if you have any leads. JulieLounibos@gmail.com

Art Village Zoning Changes Approved in VB
This long awaited press release rates publishing in its entirety. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard for so many years!

CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES ZONING CHANGES FOR NEW
DOWNTOWN ART VILLAGE
Nonprofit Organization formed to develop and support art village
 in the Edgewood Neighborhood

Vero Beach – Long awaited plans for an art village in the downtown Edgewood neighborhood were realized with a City Council vote to create new zoning for the area. In a unanimous vote, city commissioners agreed to create a special zoning district that allows for art-related commercial activity in the residential neighborhood.

Plans for the Art Village began in 2015 through a project supported by the Cultural Council of Indian River County, which brought together neighborhood residents, business leaders, architects, planners city officials and local cultural groups. Together they created a proposal to reimagine the historic Edgewood neighborhood as a cultural arts village complementary to the existing businesses in the Arts District along 14th Avenue. This plan was accepted by the City Council in 2016 and made part of the city’s comprehensive plan in 2018.

Within the new special zoning district, artists will have the opportunity to live, work and sell their art in home studios. These studios will be supported by cafes, bed and breakfast lodging, and other small businesses related to the arts. The Art Village will reflect principles of retrofitting rather than redevelopment -- preserving structures, street layouts and motifs that are an important part of Vero’s heritage and sense of place. There will be no increase in neighborhood density.

With the zoning approval, the project will move from the Cultural Council to a new nonprofit organization, the Friends of the Vero Beach Art Village, which will provide support for the development and ongoing success of the Art Village. The nonprofit group is made up of Edgewood residents and business owners along with community members who share this vision of neighborhood revitalization, celebration of the arts and improved quality of life.

Neighborhood beautification efforts are already underway, including colorful murals and street art, tree planting and street cleanup. The nonprofit is developing major campaign to encourage artists and other merchants to purchase or rent property in the neighborhood. Skip Fuller, chair of the new organization, said, “The goal is to make the neighborhood attractive so more creative people will move into downtown Vero Beach. We are also hoping local residents and businesses will become active partners in the art village project.”

The Vero Beach Art Village is a transformation of the historical Edgewood neighborhood in the city’s downtown area as a living celebration of the arts. Its zoning as a special purpose district allows a mixed residential and commercial environment where artists and other merchants can live, work and interact with art patrons. To find out more, including how you can become a Village merchant or volunteer and support this effort, visit verobeachartvillage.com.

Earth Day - Earth Month - Earth Always
Maybe, being in Florida, we're more aware of the beauty around us than people in areas where more time is spent inside than out. Visit an art gallery, museum, or festival here and notice how much of the art depicts nature — seascapes, savannas, flora and fauna — in some form. We're grateful for those (thank you, Edie Widder and ORCA) who monitor its health and send out alerts when it needs our help.

Florida has an abundance of outdoor havens to share. Explore, learn, create, or simply sit quietly in a shady spot. April is the month that reminds us to pay attention to what we have and of the need to protect it. Below is a short, incomplete list of some places you might like to know. Add these to your checklist of places to discover this year and please share any of your own favorites. Note that some websites have noted Covid closures, so check before you go.

Pack your sketch pad, paints and easel, camera, or chap book if you're a poet, and hit the road this summer. Don't forget water, mosquito repellent, and a bag for carrying out your trash.

Neil Capozzi, owner of Stuart Art Supply and Artists Nook, Explains Shortages

"Covid-19 continues to impact the availability of product at Stuart Art Supply. We are continuing to experiencing shortages due to many factors. It seems like everyday there is some new challenge, recently due to the freezing temperatures in Texas supplies related to the manufacturing of acrylic paints and mediums are in short supply. Products imported from Asia and Europe are stuck on ships and at ports of entry. High demand for all things art related have increased demand for the items we sell."
