FROM THE DESK OF THE DARK MASTER
Greetings!

If ever the great demons of the lower planes were to cast a spell of pestilence across our world, I suspect it would feel much like what life today is like. The coronavirus is here and it is frightening. I hope you are all reading this at home, practicing social distancing and hand-washing!

We are working through the many ramifications of this change. In the last several days, our convention schedule has shifted dramatically, as Gary Con, Whosyeron, Round Table Con, Furry Weekend Atlanta, the ACD Open House, and the Long Island Con all are canceled, and UK Games Expo and Lexicon have shifted their dates. More are sure to follow.

But there is a silver lining here. We need to make the transition to more online gaming support, and we’ll now be making that transition FAST. Look for many announcements in the days to come regarding benefits for those who gamers who will be running DCC and its cousins online!

FIVE NEW THIRD-PARTY DCC RELEASES IN OUR ONLINE STORE
Are you at home and needing some new reading material? We can help with that!

This week FIVE new third-party products for  Dungeon Crawl Classics  have hit our online store. From new zines to limited-edition publications, we’ve got something that will appeal to everyone.

Let’s look at what’s available!
Welcome to the first issue of Tales from the Smoking Wyrm , a DCC fanzine drawing from the history of zines.

The Wyrm is a big fan of gaming zines of all stripes, and we hope to bring you the same high-quality content for a DCC audience! Our first issue contains 8 features, usable by players and judges alike!

  • Paladins—A new take on an old class
  • Cthulhu as Patron—Why choose the lesser of neutrals?
  • Culpepper’s Herbal—Herbs for your game
  • The Silver Ball—A mysterious way to add and remove characters to and from the game
  • Telepathic Rats—Expanded rules for a plucky companion
  • Rites & Rituals, Part I—How taking the long road to power can reap huge benefits
  • Onward Retainer—An adventuring comic in an old-school style, starring the Legion
  • Wyrm Words—A crossword puzzle of all the Gygaxian words in the first issue

This is the limited-edition version of issue one, with each issue being hand-numbered X out of 300. Once all 300 copies are sold, this edition will not come again. Featuring Cordwain cover stock nearly identical in texture to the original  D&D  boxed set pamphlets and archival interior Mohawk smooth paper stock, this zine is meant to last for a long time! This issue is printed with environmentally friendly black and metallic gold inks throughout, which allows us to create eye-popping tables and artwork. The staples are enameled glossy black to prevent rust damage. This issue features a gatefold center spread to allow the Cullpepper’s Herbal section to rally lay nicely on the page. Further, the book features real latin Anathema to protect against theft, or risk the punishment of higher beings. As Todd Bunn of Gateway Games & More says, “This is the fanciest fanzine ever!”

This is the LIMITED EDITION Risograph printing.
Stickers to populate hex maps, and calendars. Tables to create places and the creatures that haunt them.

The Hexanomicon is a setting generator using stickers of hex map landscape elements, sheets on which to place them and tables to determine the contents of hexes. Specific destinations are left to the judge. I dot my map with published adventure modules and a few NPC homes.
The party may learn that there is a Wizard’s tower a few days journey away. Their journey should not be trivial, use the hex name generator to create The Glittering Bogs of Ada’akka. The bogs will contain beasts so Jumping Gore Beetles are created from a table that combines stats for jumping, gore, and beetles. Write down the hex contents on the Judge’s Map and mark the event on the calendar. Includes Hex generator, Beastomatic, Run/Rescue for when Crom is too mean, and rules for ley lines and a Divination spell to find them.

Map, calendar, and sticker sheets are also available as a free download to print more.

Contents:
  • Zine printed on heavyweight paper
  • Map stickers 1
  • Map stickers 2
  • Luck token stickers
  • Groovy sticker (designs vary)
  • Players map (hex area)
  • Judge’s map (hex area)
  • World map (to organize area maps)
  • Year calendar
  • Month calendar
  • Blank sticker (print your own locations)
A year in the making; the triumphant return of Meanderings, Reavers, Swords, Sorcery, and Shirts of Red.

  • First installment of the Reaver’s Gallery
The first adventure module for Star Crawl !

You’ve got a lead on an intact space station from a long-dead race. Its contents could be incredibly valuable- or incredibly deadly!
This is the first standalone adventure module for  Star Crawl , intended for a party of 2nd level characters.

Threen Station Zero’s 48 black & white, zine-sized pages include:

  • A complete self-contained adventure designed for Star Crawl but ready to drop into your DCC or MCC games.
  • Pre-generated characters & ship stats to get you right into the action!
  • Bonus Star Crawl content: tables for generating random alien features!

While this adventure is compatible with any game system,  Star Crawl  is designed for use with the  Dungeon Crawl Classics and  Mutant Crawl Classics RPGs.
A third-party compatible DCC adventure module consisting of three connected adventures for characters levels 0 to 1.

Fantastic Adventures and the Disgruntled Gong Farmer  is a  Dungeon Crawl Classics  adventure module comprised of three connected adventures, set in the Villages of the Muir Forest. Most living here are simple folk, content living their mundane day-to-day lives. However, there are those who seek to live a life greater than the lives they were destined to live. This is where the first adventure, The King’s Challenge  character funnel, starts.

The second adventure,  Kobold’s Stole My Cat! , begins right after The King’s Challenge . The characters are newly forged first level adventurers seeking to establish their reputations in the world. The characters’ next adventure takes them to the village of Greenleaf, where they are tasked with rescuing a cat from a gang of kobolds. There, the characters encounter unique NPCs, explore underground tunnels and uncover clues to an ancient civilization.

The third adventure,  The Gong Farmer’s Revenge , picks up after  Kobold’s Stole My Cat! , when the beloved village monster, Oscar, is killed by the Gong Farmer. Now, the characters are tasked with tracking down the Gong Farmer and bringing him to justice.
HOBONOMICON #2 NOW AVAILABLE!
Doug Kovacs' fantastic work of fantasy enters another level with the release of Hobonomicon #2 !

This is more than just a zine. It’s a complete system for creating and populating settings, and it is full of an amazing number of resources! Available directly from Doug, the second issue (or third, depending on how you want to count things) contains a lot of great material.

In this issue you will find:
  • Verses of Natraz, new spells for your DCC game
  • Stefan Poag's, Never Trust a Wizard
  • the continuation of Death of a Reaver
  • AND a never before seen piece of art from the legendary D&D artist Jeff Easley that has been decades in the making.

Make your own decisions. Elastic thought is paramount. Dig your hands into the clay of the universe and shape existence as you will.

The Hobonomicon demands it!

GAMA EXPO RECAP!
With everything that is going on in the world, it might be easy to overlook some of the other things that have happened lately. Still, it’s always nice to share good things, such as our experience at the GAMA Expo 2020!

Representatives from Goodman Games—including our own Dark Master—descended upon Reno, NV to share all things Goodman with over 400 retailers in attendance at the show. In particular, we wanted to spread the word on  DCC Day , and we are happy to report that it was met with enthusiasm and open arms!

A huge number of stores signed up for the event, happy to bring the excitement to their customers. We’ll be putting up more information, including a list of participating retailers, soon, but for now, we wanted to share the news with everyone on a more visceral level.

So a huge thanks to all the retailers who stopped by the booth and signed up for  DCC Day  and/or discovered what Goodman Games has to offer.

COMICS KINGDOM RECAP!
by Brendan LaSalle
I managed to get one final FLGS game in before retreating to my lair for a few weeks of self-quarantine. Comics Kingdom hosted an event that brought in a few locals, including Randy Andrews, the man who made it all happen.

And did it ever happen! I ran my fun horror game with the terrible working title, The Beggar's Coin ! The game ex-adventurers managed to escape the clutches of terrible Iktomi, but at terrible cost! I saw some real heroism, great game play, and wonderful roleplaying from my intrepid bunch. I would be completely satisfied if (Crom and Mitra forbid!) my Comic Kingdom game winds up being my last in-person game of 2020.

Huge thanks to Randy Andrews, and the Comics Kingdom team!

SUPPORT THE MONSTERS! MONSTERS! AND TOUGHEST DUNGEON IN THE WORLD KICKSTARTER
Our friends over at Flying Buffalo are reviving one of the classic role-playing systems and pairing it with a brand new adventure to accompany the game. The Toughest Dungeon In The World is a solo-adventure originally published in 1980, and now specially updated for the new version of the Monsters! Monsters! RPG.

Let's allow Flying Buffalo to give you the details themselves:
In 1976 Ken St Andre—the creator of the 2nd oldest role-playing game, Tunnels & Trolls—created a companion game to T&T, called Monsters! Monsters! It was first published by Metagaming Concepts and then again by Flying Buffalo in 1979. The game remained unchanged from then until now...

It's 2020 - Ken St. Andre has worked since the 1970's to make games that are better for the players; for example, the Origins award-winning Stormbringer for Chaosuim, and Computer Hall of Fame Wasteland for Electronic Arts/Interplay. (It was the first post-apocalyptic rpg.) Plus Deluxe Tunnels & Trolls for Flying Buffalo. Now he has updated and created a new edition of Monsters! Monsters! that retains much of its original appeal and structure, but with all new art and new options like stunting and monster chaos factor.
Neither of these books are created by, nor published in any way, by Goodman Games. We're just a fan of the fantastic material that Flying Buffalo puts out (such as the Grimtooth's Traps books that we do publish!), and wanted to share it with our fans.
SUPPORT THE SALTY FUNNEL DCC THIRD-PARTY KICKSTARTER!
FINAL WEEK!
You've got only one week left to hit the high seas!

There are 3 themes to play in The Salty Funnel: Prison Transport, Slave Trader, and High Society. And maybe just a hint of a nod towards a particularly popular space epic that happened a long time ago, in a...well, you get it.

Here is the story behind The Salty Funnel.

We're on a Boat!

Captain Guido: "Ain't never met a paying customer I didn't like. So what if their faces were hidden in the cowls of purple robes with weird gold lettering around the cuffs and hem. Sure, maybe a tentacle slithered out of one of those cowls…but their coin passed the bite test, so I took it, and their smelly, slimy crates."

Mr. Skubagai, First Mate: "If the Cap'n had asked, me, I'd have told him that taking on cargo of an illicit nature with a ship full of landlubbers was a bad idea, but when's he ever consult his first mate? And, why are all those crates leaking some sort of ichor?"

Quartermaser Warklaw: "You even sail, bro?"

Captain: "Yes. I mean, I did just win this ship in a card game from a guy in a cape…"

We've sailed! Well, not a project via Kickstarter…

A Barnacle-Laden Salty Funnel is a twist on nautical adventure themes. We'll forego all the Aye Mateys and Avast Ye Scurvy Dogs! This is the first in what we hope becomes a series of funnels we produce that have a multi-theme angle to them. We filled 3 Occupations tables (Christophor said that's a pain in the @ss but he's now a master of medieval jobs), took three standard nautical themes and then twisted them into a single product. This gives better replayability as well as some options in each playthrough. Choose from a cargo hold full of soon-to-be-slaves, a brig full of criminals, or a ballroom full of pompous a… elites.

So show some love for these souls set adrift! You can lend your aid over on their Kickstarter right now! Avast!

APPENDIX N ARCHAEOLOGY: ALGERNON BLACKWOOD
by Bradley K. McDevitt
Contrary to what his name suggests he was, English author Algernon Henry Blackwood (1869-1951) was neither an escapee from a Charles Dickens novel nor a member of the faculty of Hogwarts. What Blackwood was, in fact, was one of the most admired writers of the early twentieth century. H.P. Lovecraft, one of the cornerstone authors of Appendix N, had this to say about one of Blackwood’s stories: “The Willows is the finest weird story I have ever read.”

Strong praise from a writer who took great pride in the breadth of his literary scholarship. However, Lovecraft also made this comment about Blackwood in one of his thousands of pages of correspondence to friends: “It is safe to say that Blackwood is the greatest living weirdest despite unevenness and a poor prose style...”
