Women's History Month: #STEMLikeAWoman
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub has launched #STEMLikeAWoman for the month of March. We’re launching this social media campaign to bring awareness regarding the gender gap in STEM careers.

HOW IT WORKS

We’re kicking off #STEMLikeAWoman on March 8, International Women’s Day. We’ll kick it off with social media posts tagging 500 Women Scientists Corvallis. From there, we want you to tag a woman in your life who works in or is studying to work in a STEM career. Please use the #STEMLikeaWoman in your post to help bring awareness and to take part in the campaign.

To make it more exciting and to provide some extra motivation, the Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub will donate $5 (up to $500) for every #STEMLikeaWoman tag to 500 Women Scientists Corvallis!

Visit our website for more information and visit any of our social media sites below to take part in #STEMLikeaWoman:
Closing the Gap: Meet Barbara Hanley!
Meet March's Closing the Gap featured role model, Barbara Hanley!

Who is Barbara Hanley?
Barbara Hanley is an Environmental & Occupational Epidemiologist. She works for Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) as a Resource Associate at the Institute of Occupational Health Sciences. She is also a Ph.D. candidate in Environmental & Occupational Health at Oregon State University (OSU).

What is an epidemiologist?
As an epidemiologist, her work is focused on the evaluation of chemical policy effectiveness and translating exposure science to improve policies focused on protecting human health.

Hear what Barbara has to say about the impact of Closing the Gap:
"I like the slogan of the Closing the Gap program “girls cannot be what they cannot see." That was true for me. I wanted to be an astronaut, but there were no women astronauts when I graduated high school and started college so I chose to go to medical school because that's what people told me I should do if I wanted to work in a scientific field. Today, there are women in almost every field I can think of … astronaut, doctor, mechanic, soldier, Vice President!"

To learn more, please check out our entire interview with Barbara!
There are different ways to participate in Closing the Gap:

Featured Role Model - This includes participating in a 20-30 minute podcast interview and getting your photo taken for the development of a poster.
Written Interview - For this, you will fill out a Q&A form, and we will use that information to write an article.
Speaking opportunities - This can include being available to give a presentation about your career to students, attending a Q&A session for an event, and other opportunities.
Mentorship - This aspect of the project is currently in development, but it would be an opportunity for you to connect with a girl (Middle/High School) who has shown interest in your career.
If you're interested in participating in any or all of these opportunities, please fill out this brief interest form. Thank you for your consideration!
Closing the Gap Podcast
Our Closing the Gap podcast has launched! For our first episode, we interviewed Britney Cawrse (our featured role model for February).
