This Week at Christ Church
Words to Live By
From Fr. Michael Tinnon
  Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works. (Psalm 105:2)

"It's a Wonder Full Christmas"
One of the most meaningful holiday traditions that I’ve continued for the past forty-five years is to watch the timeless Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. This Christmas blockbuster stars Jimmy Stewart as George Bailey, a despondent family man who is saved from committing suicide by an elderly guardian angel named Clarence who is trying to earn his wings.
The angel Clarence gives George a great gift: The chance to see what the wo rld would be like if he had never been born. At the very end, Clarence says, You see, George, you really did have a wonderful life.”  The story ends with George discovering the deeper meaning of Christmas and running down the streets of downtown Bedford Falls proclaiming, “Merry Christmas.”

Well, the Christmas season is here again. What are you feeling this Christmas? The nostalgic sights and sounds and smells... Read more here

Greening of the Church
Sunday, December 22, 2019
The parish family is invited to help decorate the church for Christmas! We hope that you will stay after the 10:00 a.m. service this Sunday, December 22 to lend a hand in preparation for the Christmas services. There are many tasks - wreaths to be hung, bows to be tied, greens to be arranged- something for everyone. You might consider wearing comfortable clothes to church that day. This is a festive occasion, a wonderful chance to work together and get to know fellow parishioners. We're even planning on having pizza for lunch.

Here is a beautiful video, shot and produced by parishioner Alan Tran, of last year's event.
Advent and Christmas
Christmas Services
Something for everyone!
For the young and young at heart the family service at 3:00 p.m. is for you. It is a simple service where the Christmas story is told through readings, carols and, of course, the pageant. There are parts for any and all children who wish to participate. Just report "back stage" in Hinde Hall by 2:30 p.m. to don a costume. Nursery care is available.

The popular 5:00 p.m. service is a festive Eucharist that is usually packed; come early to grab your spot! Overflow seating is available in Hinde Hall where there will be toys to amuse wiggly little ones and room to roam. Nursery care is available.

The lovely "midnight" festive Eucharist at 10:00 p.m. is followed by a champagne reception in Hinde Hall. No nursery that late; little ones should be counting sugarplums!

Celebrate Christmas Day at 10:00 a.m. with a traditional service that includes carols. Children of all ages are welcome to wear their pj's. Bring a Christmas toy to be blessed. No nursery - everyone come to church!

Epiphany Service for All Ages
It's Family First Sunday!
Young and old are invited to join us for an interactive celebration of the feast of Epiphany, Sunday, January 5 . Highlights include the arrival of the three kings and a children’s message. Children will be invited to gather at the altar for the Eucharist. There will be just one service at 9:00 a.m.

After the service, adults are encouraged to stay for a listening session with the Call Committee for our new Rector. Children are invited to participate in an hour of Epiphany fun with Charlette! Smell frankincense and myrrh, make delicious star cookies, and learn about how we can shine our light all through the coming year.

Christmas isn't over yet... come and hear the rest of the story!

The cost is a donation of canned food for the St. Mark's Neighborhood Food pantry. Your evite will be forthcoming in the new year.

End of year giving
2020 is on the horizon; we can see it from here, but before we ring in the new year it is important to wrap up 2019 business. In considering this year's giving, additional end-of-year donations, and/or fulfillment of next year's pledge, please remember that you have until Monday, December 30 to make donations, for this year or next, that may be included in your 2019 charitable deductions. There are a variety of ways to give to Christ Church:
  • Automatic withdrawal from your savings or checking;
  • Credit card donation;
  • Contributions of stock;
  • Qualified Charitable Distributions from retirement accounts.
Of course, we suggest you contact a tax adviser to determine what is best for your situation. If you are unsure of your progress with this year's pledge, just contact Christie Tugend and she can give you an update.

Thank you for your support of the parish. Each and every contribution enables Christ Church to fulfill its mission and supports its ministries.

New Vestry Nominations
From the Senior Warden
At our next parish meeting (February 23, 2020) our congregation will elect four new members to the Christ Church vestry . The vestry is the elected body of the parish that shares, with the rector, the responsibility for oversight of parish life and ministry. This includes ensuring that the spiritual mission of the church is maintained as well as carrying out the more secular duties related to church property, finances, and personnel.

Serving on the vestry is a unique experience and a special call to work together with other committed lay leaders playing a key role in the operation of and planning for the future of, Christ Church. It can also be a joyful experience that enriches both one's spiritual life and one's feeling of connectedness with the church community.

I ask you to prayerfully consider whether you might be called to this service at Christ Church or know of someone who would wish to be considered. The Vestry Nomination Committee is now accepting nominations . If you have any questions or wish to make a nomination, please contact Nominating Committee Chairman, Hal Skelly or me, Paul Laedlein, Senior Warden .

Not Able to Make it to Church?
3 things to DO....
Some Sundays you just can't make it to church. In that case, here are three things you can do:
  • Watch the Sunday service on our live-stream, both the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. - via the website
  • Each week's Sunday bulletins for both services are also available on the website "Worship" page.
  • Sermons are usually posted on the homepage of the website. under "News".

Remember, the live-stream is just that, it broadcasts the services in real time, no recording is currently available.

Listening Sessions

We are holding a series of listening sessions to hear what your hopes and dreams are for Christ Church and what qualities you consider important in a new rector. Please put on your calendar Sunday January 5 for a single service at 9 a.m. followed by a listening session.

In addition to our all church listening session, we are holding a number of smaller listening sessions with affinity groups. If your ministry group has not been approached to schedule one, please contact Julie Young if you are interested in having one.

Survey

We are inviting parishioners to complete the Church Assessment Tool (CAT) , an on-line instrument that will help leaders gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church. The information gained from this assessment will be valuable in helping the leaders of Christ Church as they discern the call of a new rector.

You should have received an email with a unique link to the CAT. We are asking you to go online by clicking on the link provided and tell us about your experiences in and priorities for our church. Please do not discuss the survey or your answers with others as this may influence their answers. Please complete your survey by Thursday, January 9 .

If you need a paper copy contact Julie Young at 619-213-2785 or come to the parish office, and we will provide one for you along with a self-addressed stamped return envelope.

All answers are strictly anonymous. We have no way of matching any assessment to a particular person, so please feel free to candidly share your perceptions, opinions and experiences. Our future together is dependent on your participation and honest answers.

Many thanks,
The Call Committee of Christ Church
