How Inclusive Workplaces Help Businesses Thrive

Applying for a job is not for the faint of heart. It’s a lot of work searching different job sites, customizing your resume, writing a compelling cover letter, and filling out long online forms. And if you get an interview, you then have to prepare for all the questions you may have to answer.

Now imagine you have the right experience plus a disability that makes any part of the process difficult or inaccessible to you. This is still the case for the majority of people with disabilities who want to work but face insurmountable barriers in the application process or on the job.

That’s why “Advancing Access and Equity” is the rightful theme for this year’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. It’s a time for businesses to recognize the value that people with disabilities bring and take action to create inclusive workplaces every day of the year.

When businesses hire people with disabilities, they experience:

  • Access to a larger pool of qualified applicants
  • Increased innovation in problem-solving
  • Greater employee engagement and retention
  • Better overall company performance in the marketplace

Disability Rights Texas (DRTx) works to create inclusive workplaces in Texas by:

  • Representing clients in employment discrimination legal matters.
  • Advocating for those using state vocational rehab services through our Client Assistance Program.
  • Providing information through our PABSS program on how people can work without losing their disability benefits.

We also have many resources on our website to help people advocate for their rights at work:
