Greetings!

Spring always arrives faster than expected, and you already know the difference preparation makes. This issue is a reminder to stay ahead—fine-tuning the details, avoiding a few common missteps, and taking stock of what you’ll want ready when the season shifts. If you’d like to review what you already have and plan what’s next, I’m happy to set aside time for a spring check-in. (770) 309-6597

How to Build an Outfit: Start With the Shirt

We’re kicking off a new series designed to take the guesswork out of getting dressed—one piece at a time. First up: the shirt. It’s the foundation of almost every outfit, and when it’s right, everything else falls into place. When it’s wrong… well, no jacket can save it.

Start with the occasion.

Before you think color or pattern, think context. Are you dressing for a life celebration, a cocktail party, or a business meeting? Is this a first meeting or a second? Are you meeting someone older, younger, more conservative, or more relaxed? The shirt sets the tone before you say a word.

Dark suit? Choose contrast.

One of the most common mistakes is pairing solid colors that are too close in tone. A navy suit with a dark blue shirt looks muddy, not refined. Contrast creates clarity. Light shirt, darker suit—or a clear separation in color—always wins.

Patterns are welcome (with rules).

Yes, you can mix patterns. Just be intentional. One should be subtle (fine stripe, small check), and the other should be bigger and bolder. Two loud patterns competing for attention never look confident—just confused. When choosing a patterned shirt, go for one that includes the color of your jacket to create harmony.

Match the formality.

Not every meeting calls for a classic poplin dress shirt. More casual or creative environment? A knit shirt can work beautifully—but it still needs to be elevated. Upscale fabric, clean lines, proper fit. This is not the place for your tech-club polo under a custom suit. Want to wear a dress shirt without a tie? Choose one with colored buttons for a finished look.

A great outfit doesn’t start with the jacket or the shoes—it starts with the shirt. Get that right, and you’re already ahead of the room.

Clothing Faux Pas

I see these all the time – not on my clients of course. You probably already know most of these faux pas, but a reminder never hurts. Even well-dressed men slip into habits that can quietly undermine an otherwise sharp outfit.

A few worth calling out:

  • Don’t fake a suit. A black blazer with metal buttons worn with black trousers is not a substitute for a proper suit.
  • Be mindful when skipping the tie. If you’re wearing a knit shirt or any shirt without a tie, buttoning your jacket looks forced. If you must button, keep it to the top button only.
  • Retire faded black socks. Your sock is an extension of your trouser. Either match it cleanly or go intentionally contrasting—never tired and washed-out.

You’ve invested in good clothing. These small adjustments ensure your look always reads intentional, modern, and confident.

Now Is the Time to Design Spring

Spring always arrives faster than expected. The men who enjoy it best aren’t scrambling—they’re ready. This is your reminder to take stock now and make sure your wardrobe is designed, ordered, and waiting when the season shifts.

Do you have these Spring Essentials ready to go?

  • Tan suit – versatile, timeless, and indispensable once the weather warms
  • Seersucker – classic spring ease with real personality
  • Wool / Silk / Linen blend – the perfect balance of structure and breathability
  • Spring/Summer cashmere – light, refined, and ideal for cooler mornings and evenings

Here are a few of our favorite new lightweight swatches from Loro Piana and Scabal:

It's also a smart time to assess your Year-Round Cornerstones:

  • Navy blazer – the hardest-working piece in a man’s wardrobe
  • Tan sport coat – effortless with denim, trousers, or dress slacks

Custom garments take time—and the best cloth is always spoken for early.

Designing now means you’re wearing exactly what you want all season long, not wishing you had it when everyone else already does.

If you’re not sure what gaps exist in your wardrobe, now is the perfect moment to review and plan ahead.
