Dear Sherwood,

As we recognize Black History Month, we celebrate the rich contributions of Black leaders, advocates, and families within the autism community. While February is a powerful reminder to uplift these voices, at Sherwood, inclusion happens year-round. We’re committed to fostering a community where every student and client feels seen, valued, and heard. 

This month, I had the privilege of speaking with Camille Proctor, founder of the The Color of Autism Foundation. In our conversation, I learned more about her journey and the critical work she is doing to support Black autistic individuals and their families. Her story reinforces the importance of advocacy and authentic representation. I hope you take a few minutes to hear her powerful insights.

Meet Jessica!

Meet Jessica Thomas, Adult Day Services Manager! When you enter Sherwood Autism Center, you’re greeted by Jessica at the front desk. Her role is multifaceted, connecting parents/guardians, service coordinators, clients, and more to the resources they need at Sherwood. “Sherwood is always evolving,” she says. “We are always looking for ways to be better. That will keep us growing.” 

• Her Background: Jessica has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology, and she began her career as a paraprofessional at Fort Osage School District before transitioning to a program coordinator role, managing ISLs for adults with disabilities. After years in office and accounting management, she brought her 20+ years of experience to Sherwood as our ADS Manager. 
• Joy Outside of Work: Jessica loves watching her kids play their sports. She’s also a big fan of the beach and cherishes her time there when she gets to be at one! 
• Sherwood’s Strength: “The individuals are the BEST part of Sherwood,” she says. “The individuals are all special in their own way, just as we all are. It’s always fun to help show them the things they are capable of, especially when they don’t know they can do it!”

Grab your wand and royal dress, and join the Magical Kingdom Party by Merriam Parks and Recreation. Join two beloved princesses for an event with storytime and games on Saturday, March 8.

Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight

Explore this free exhibit and learn about the history of African Americans in flight at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center. This traveling exhibit is organized in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
