LET'S TALK ABOUT ADDING & SUBTRACTING!
Let’s Talk, Read and Sing about ADDING & SUBTRACTING! Addition and subtraction are important building blocks of math, and by talking with your baby about these concepts you’re preparing her for kindergarten and beyond. During diaper time, wiggle and count your baby’s fingers and toes. “1..2..3..4..5! You have five toes on your foot!”

Talking is Teaching has pulled fun tips and resources grounded in the best science, to help you talk, read, and sing with your child every day.

Let’s talk about ADDING & SUBTRACTING by turning everyday moments into math moments! When you are at the grocery store count together the items, like apples, that go in your cart.

Add It Up
Talking is Teaching

The world is full of opportunities to practice addition and subtraction! As you go for a walk with your little one, ask your child to count the steps between two stores. Then, count the steps between two streetlights. Which took more steps? Which distance is farther?

Let's Talk About Math
Talking is Teaching

Research tells us that exposing children to math early improves their success in school. Talking to young children about numbers helps their brains develop and improves their confidence with math later on. So, get counting! These ideas will help spark your child’s math interest while you talk, read and sing throughout your day together!

THE IMPORTANCE OF TALKING TO YOUNG CHILDREN
Video: Everyday Fun with Addition and Subtraction
Too Small to Fail & Zero to Three
This is a part of a series of videos Too Small to Fail developed with ZERO TO THREE highlighting the foundation of early math skills in the first five years of life, and fun, everyday activities parents and caregivers can use to support this learning.

An early understanding of addition and subtraction can be seen when children experiment with:
  • Counting the number of items in a group of objects
  • Adding objects to a group
  • Removing objects from a group
  • Comparing groups of objects to figure out which has more or if they have the same amount.
