Let’s Talk About SHAPES! When you talk to your baby about shapes, you build his/ her early math knowledge and prepare him for elementary school and beyond. Have a shape scavenger hunt with your child! Together, you can search for car tires (circles), windows (rectangles), and stop signs (hexagons).
Talking is Teaching has tips and resources to help parents talk to their children, even those who are very young.

FUN WITH SHAPES FOR AGES 0-5 YEARS OLD
Talking is Teaching's Shapes tip sheet has exciting, age-appropriate activities parents and children can do to have fun with math and learn about shapes!
|
|
There are plenty of shapes at home, but a trip to the grocery store offers some fun ways to find all sorts of shapes!
- Have your child trace the edges of a box of cereal or crackers and count the sides. Say, “The top of the box is a rectangle” (or square if all four sides are the same length).
- Point out the express sign that says “10 items or fewer.” Ask, “Is this sign a square or a rectangle? How do you know?”
- When paying for your groceries, point out the different shapes of money. Say, “This dollar bill is a rectangle. What shape is the quarter? Are all my coins the same shape? Are they the same size?”
Talking Is Teaching has more tips and resources to help parents talk to their children, even those who are very young.

Using Everyday Moments to Inspire Early Math Skills
by: Too Small to Fail
"Early math, like early literacy, helps build a foundation for later learning that prepares children for success in school and beyond. Many studies have shown that children who are exposed to math early in life do better in school and apply the math skills they learn to other learning. In fact, it appears that math—more than any other subject area—is a better predictor of future academic success.."
