Juneteenth Celebration
T
oday commemorates a significant milestone in our nation's history.
Juneteenth marks the day that emancipated slaves learned of their freedom and their equality of rights under the provisions of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Although the historic order was enacted on January 1, 1863, many slaves were not made aware of their freedom until hearing a notice read to them on June 19, 1865 which was more than two years past their emancipation date. There has been a resurgence of Juneteenth celebrations in recent decades to honor African American culture. While not yet a nationally recognized holiday, many state and municipalities observe Juneteenth celebrations. We wish everyone a happy and safe Juneteenth.
