Principal Message
Hello Letford Families,

This week I was able to observe our students learning about gratitude. Our teachers do a great job of teaching the whole child. I learned from some of our second graders that their parents and guardians are their "Sunshine". By asking our students their mood we were able to have some good conversations and were able to help students start their day on the right track.

May is a time of the year where we do some end-of-the-year testing in school. Your students have been doing an excellent job. These tests help us understand how we need to adjust our teaching. With the weather getting nicer it is great to get outside and play, but with the days getting later our children must be getting good rest and a good night's sleep. Thank you for your help to make sure everyone can do their best.

We will be having a groundbreaking carnival for the new Elwell school on May 27th. There will be no school at LES this day, but we encourage all families to join us for the activities we have planned. There will be more information to come regarding a schedule and activities for this day. This is also when we will reveal the new school mascot and school colors! Choosing colors and the new mascot will be made with input from all the staff and students at LES. 

With a new school, there will be new boundaries for the district as well. We will grandfather all LES students into Elwell Elementary. Because Elwell will be a much bigger school we have to move some boundaries to reduce overcrowding in our other elementary schools. There is some information below to help answer questions about boundaries. As always you can call or email with questions. We are always happy to help.

CMAS Testing Schedule
CMAS is administered each year across the state and the tests are the only common measuring tool for Colorado students. This year, the state requested to not give the assessment to our students, however, that request was denied. As an alternative, the state asked to have students only take 1 assessment at each grade level. This request was approved, so each grade level will have 3 sessions of only one subject area to test this year.

The CMAS assessment schedule will be as follows for students attending school in-person:
  • 3rd grade students - ELA - May 4, 5, 6 - 9:00-10:30
  • 4th Grade Students - Math - May 4, 5, 6 - 1:00-2:05
  • 5th Grade Students - ELA - May 4, 5, 6 - 11:00-12:30

Online students will take the assessment at the administration building at the following times with their classes:
  • 3rd grade students - ELA - April 20, 21, 22 - 10:00-12:00
  • 4th Grade Students - Math - April 27, 28, 29 - 10:00-11:30
  • 5th Grade Students - ELA - May 4, 5, 6 - 10:00-12:00
For online students who will be taking the assessments, transportation will be available if needed.

With a new elementary school opening Fall of 2022, we began discussing what our boundaries will be for elementary school attendance.

The goal is to have every current Letford Elementary School student (grades K-3 currently) attend the new elementary school in August 2022, even if your attendance boundary changes. We will provide transportation for Letford students who need transportation to the new school.

If you have experience in the construction industry and a desire to help high school students get a head start in construction careers, this may be the job for you! 

Job Title: Teacher, Skilled Trades: General Construction Pathway, RHS 

About: The General Construction Pathway at Roosevelt High School is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2021. This Pathway enables students who are interested in careers in the construction industry to gain valuable skills, certifications, and experience while in high school. Program highlights:
A partnership with Aims Community College enables students to gain certifications while in high school while providing a seamless transition to continued education.
The curriculum, supplied by Associated General Contractors (AGC) Colorado, is approved by the Home Builders Institute (HBI).
 It is anticipated that new industry standard tools and equipment will be available via grant funding prior to the start date.
 
Skills and Education: Current teaching license and experience in construction OR a bachelor’s or higher degree plus 2,000 hours of verified occupational (non-teaching) experience in the construction industry OR less than a bachelor’s degree plus 4,000 hours of verified occupational (non-teaching) experience in the construction industry.

What Sets Roosevelt High School Graduates Apart?

Weld RE-5J School District is continuously expanding opportunities for students. We empower learners to discover their passions and talents through real-world experiences which connect learning to life. From elementary school through to graduation day, Weld RE-5J students are preparing for success, wherever their dreams may take them.

Weld RE-5J elementary schools provide real-world project-based activities which connect learning to life and promote creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills. This approach fosters perseverance and promotes the leadership skills needed for success at school and beyond.

Students at Milliken Middle School (MMS) are able to investigate careers and explore their interests further via elective Career and Technical Education (CTE) options which flow seamlessly into CTE Pathways at Roosevelt High School (RHS). CTE students at MMS have the opportunity to compete at conferences, learn directly from teachers and students at RHS, and engage with industry professionals. This gives learners a jump-start on high school and provides opportunities to explore career interests. 2021-2022 CTE course offerings include Introduction to Business, Culinary Nutrition, Introduction to Agriculture, Introduction to Health Science, Digital Media, and Principles of Construction.

Roosevelt High School (RHS) students have multiple opportunities to gain valuable skills, experience, college credits, and industry certifications while still in high school. These options can save on college tuition costs while enabling students to reach their career and college goals faster. Options include:
  • Dual Enrollment: College-level courses on the RHS campus or within the community enable students to earn high school credit and college credit at the same time.
  • Concurrent Enrollment: Students can request to take coursework at Aims Community College or other institutions of higher learning and apply the credit towards high school graduation as well as a college degree program.
  • Aims Career Academy: This program enables eligible RHS students to take college courses in the participating Career and Technical Education programs at Aims Community College.
  • Advanced Placement (AP): Students can earn college credit and waive introductory college courses by earning a qualifying score on AP exams. RHS currently offers the following AP opportunities through the College Board: AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP U.S. History, AP U.S. Government, AP 2D Art, and AP Music Theory.
  • Career and Technical Education Pathways (CTE): CTE Pathways are designed to ensure that graduating students meet Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness competencies and are ready to transition to further their education or enter the workforce. Industry-level certifications are offered in each pathway. RHS currently offers the following pathways: Agriculture (Ag) Business, Ag Animal Science, Ag Plant Science, Ag Power/Structures & Technology, Ag Energy, Digital Media & Communications, Design & Media Arts, Coding, Engineering, Business Administration, General Construction, Hospitality & Food Production, Education & Training, Athletic Training, General Health Science and Legal/Judicial.
  • Work-Based Learning Opportunities: A variety of opportunities include internships, mentorships, and entrepreneur projects.

When to Stay Home?
When should my child stay home from school?

If your child has a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. Children should be fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications, such as Tylenol or ibuprofen.

If your child is vomiting or has vomited in the past 24 hours.

If your child is having diarrhea or has had it in the past 24 hours.

If your child is being treated for an infection with antibiotics and it has been less than 24 hours.

If your child is too uncomfortable to learn or participate in learning.

If your child is obviously ill whether fever is present or not.

If your child has a contagious illness such as chickenpox.

If your child has a “cold” and fever, large amounts of nasal drainage and a cough present that would be disruptive to the class and student.

If your child has head lice and has not yet been treated.

If your child’s illness will make other students ill.

If your child has had a noro-type gastrointestinal virus or the “flu”, please keep them home 48 hours after symptoms are gone.

Dear Parents of 5th graders, 
All students entering 6th grade in the fall need a TDaP vaccination to comply with Colorado law before school begins. Please see that your child receives this immunization and have a copy sent to the school nurse before the first day of school. Your child will be excluded from school if this is not received.
Your physician or clinic may fax these records to us if you prefer. Personal, medical, and religious exemptions are available at the school or online: To submit a non-medical or medical exemption, go to: www.colorado.gov/vaccineexemption. We must have either the completed record or a signed exemption by the first day of school to avoid expulsion or suspension of your student in accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 25-4-902. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

We appreciate your continued support and patience as we navigate providing resources to students and families for COVID screenings. We have implemented several initiatives at the schools to provide this service to students and families with the goal of keeping students in school and decreasing quarantines. We recognize that our attempts have changed during the course of the year and ask for grace as we anticipate future changes. Currently, we are providing three services for families and students to receive COVID Screenings:
COMMUNITY NASAL SCREENINGS
Weld RE-5J offers COMMUNITY NASAL screenings on Fridays at two community locations. Appointments are available at the MAC from 8-11 and at Nelson Park Farms from 1-4. Positive results from this screening are NOT reported to the district but are reported to the participant. Use this link to schedule appointments for NASAL screenings. RANDOM SALIVA SCREENING
Weld RE-5J is offering RANDOM SALIVA screening for students. Families can enroll their students in the on-going RANDOM SALIVA screenings and students will be asked to provide a saliva sample randomly. Positive results from this screening are reported to the district and the participant. Use this link to enroll in the RANDOM SALIVA initiative.  https://www.primarybio.com/l/weld 
Parents must select "YES" for the "Optional Random In School Testing." 

ON-DEMAND SALIVA SCREENING
Weld RE-5J is offering ON-DEMAND SALIVA screening for students. Families may consider this option when students are exhibiting symptoms or have had a possible exposure to COVID. 

ON-DEMAND SALIVA screenings require the family to enroll their students in the on-going RANDOM SALIVA screenings at https://www.primarybio.com/l/weld, select "YES" for the "Optional Random In School Testing" option, AND sign a paper copy of the waiver.
This will expedite the process to allow us to collect the sample on-demand, although this will enroll the student in the RANDOM SALIVA screening. However, if families would like to unenroll in the RANDOM SALIVA screening a guardian must revoke authorization for his/her child at any time by notifying CCC in an email to legal@covidcheckcolorado.org or in writing to COVID Check Colorado, LLC, 1705 17th Street, Suite 200, Denver, CO 80202.
