Dear Lower School Families,
The first week of school is nearly finished as I write this letter, and our students have done an admirable job of learning new routines, new names, getting acquainted with new teachers, and being engaged inside and outside the classroom. A few days ago, I shared an interesting article with our faculty entitled "Twelve Days" from Responsive Classroom which detailed the belief that it takes children about that amount of time to get reacquainted with "doing school" again.

Now that the school year has begun, the normal communication I use to correspond with parents is through each Sunday's email from PACA lower school lead parents Candice Singleton and Nikki Bundy . In it you will find many details about upcoming events and interesting programs going on in the Lower School and sponsored by PACA. Please look for it each week (click here for opening letter), including this upcoming Sunday. However, I do want to share some important information about lower school events taking place next week and a few other details in this letter to ensure you are aware and can plan accordingly.
 
Thursday, August 30, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Parent Back-to-School Night
Parents and guardians are encouraged to join us to meet their teachers, both homeroom and co-curricular. Everyone will meet in the Dining Hall at 7:00 p.m. for some introductions, comments from our PACA lower school leaders and some words from Head of School Melissa Soderberg and me. At 7:25 p.m., you will have the opportunity to visit your child's classroom and learn about the year ahead. The evening will end at approximately 8:30 p.m.
 
Friday, August 31
Parent-Teacher Conferences (NO SCHOOL FOR LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLY)
These Parent-Teacher Conferences are designed to be listening conferences for faculty as you tell us about your child. You know your child best, and this is an opportunity to tell us all about him or her to help us understand better. Signups were distributed earlier this week with a designated time. CASE (our before-care and after-school program) is available free of charge during your child's conference time only. School will still be in session for all middle and upper school students that day.
 
Friday, September 14
Lower School Campout
Mark your calendars! This will be a fun opportunity to camp out in a tent as a family at school. Details will be sent next week. The following morning (Saturday, September 15) will be our schoolwide Viking Rampage Challenge followed by many other CA Community Day activities on campus.
 
Dress Code
As you were made aware this summer, the Academy Dress Code was revised for 2018-19. We are seeing many students enjoying the new ability to wear tennis shoes during the school day. Please make sure that if you purchase lace shoes, your child is independently able to tie them.
 
Car Dropoff and Pickup
Please pull all the way forward when dropping your child off. Administration is outside ready to greet your child beginning at 7:30 a.m. At dropoff in the morning, please make sure your child is ready to get out when the door opens because it helps to keep the line moving efficiently. When picking up your child, please make sure your name placard is clearly visible in the passenger side of the windshield. This is how we notify your child that you are approaching the pickup zone.
 
It has been wonderful having the students return after the summer and share their enthusiasm and love of learning with us. We look forward to the year ahead and the events this coming week.
