Letter from Michael McKenzie,
CEO of Einstein Charter Schools
In the book, The Soul Black Folk , W.E.DuBois asserts that “We have no right to sit silently by while the inevitable seeds are sown for a harvest of disaster to our children, black and white.” What this tells me is that addressing racism, injustice, and inequity requires real action.
As an urban educator, I am first a Black man in America. The hard reality is that no amount of education, civility, or 'respectability politics' serves to guarantee me (or anyone who looks like me) equity or justice. In the world of public education, where Black men comprise only 3 percent of the talent force, men and children who look like me experience microaggression that is as visible as the Coronavirus. Microaggressions are statements, actions, or incidences of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination. Sadly, social media fuels the flames of both the racists and the fake ‘woke’ alike. Then, there are the macroaggressions that I have faced (and continue to face), which look like being pulled over by police, held to unequal standards of excellence, framed by agenda-seekers.

Despite the uphill battle ahead, leaders of all races, nationalities, and creeds carry the responsibility to sow seeds of resilience and hope in our children and communities of color. With this call of action, I am inspired by Einstein: Sarah T. Reed High School's valedictorian. Ja’Nae Sylvester overcame homelessness to earn nearly $3 million in scholarships. Ja'Nae's spirit and resilience reinfuses Einstein’s mission to nurture students to be academically STRONG as well as socially and emotionally resilient.
While there are many ways we can promote equity and justice, it is crucial that my
energies sow seeds of harvest into the Einstein Learning Community in New Orleans
East. Moreover, I aspire to do so through a lens of equity that is both objective and
aspirational. On behalf of our children, I need your support.

Please sign the petition to transform or reimagine the dilapidated Six Flags in New
Orleans East at ( www.change.org/TransformOldNewOrleansSixFlagsNow ). I invite you
to contribute to our Resilience Fund and sponsor our upcoming Equity Walk on
Thursday, June 18, 2020, starting at 10:30 am. You can find other ways to support our
young people by simply making a Cash App donation of any amount to $GiveEinstein.

Lastly, the questions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are as relevant in the year 2020 as
they were in the 60’s: “Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the
question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the
question, is it right?” He would conclude that "And there comes a time when one must
take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it
is right.” America is still wrestling with the question of right versus wrong as it relates to
equity and justice. For the citizens of New Orleans, we must fight together and do what is
right: Sign the petition and sow into our youth in New Orleans East.

With love, togetherness, and urgency,
Michael McKenzie,
CEO, Einstein Schools
