What's the latest with BHS sports?

SPRING 2020
From the Athletic Director
Greetings Beaver Fans:

Although the canceling of spring sports has been heartbreaking to so many of us, especially to our seniors, we still have a couple of celebrations and some important information I’d like to share as we wrap up the school year.

SCHOLAR 101 ATHLETES
Each year, the Washington Athletic Club and Metro league honor three male and three female athletes from each school who have excelled on the field and classroom during their high school careers - The 101 Scholar Athlete award. Our recipients are all well deserving and fine representatives of Ballard High School:

George Blue: “George has been a standout student-athlete his entire time at Ballard. He is a dedicated student, great teammate and , and a relentless competitor. George consistently models the behavior we want to see in our program.”
-Coach Humphries, BHS Head Football Coach

George was a three year varsity football and three year varsity track athlete. He graduated with a 3.9 GPA and will play football next year at Pitzer Pamona in Claremont, California.

Luke Petteruti:   "Pett" is a coach's dream. He's responsible, respectful, hard working and a leader. I figured out his sophomore year that he would probably be a senior captain. I have no doubt he'll excel in college, and can only hope he comes back in four years, looking for a coaching role.
-Doug Montgomery, BHS Head Baseball Coach

Luke played varsity baseball and golf for two years. He plans to attend Cal Poly to study business administration in the fall and graduates with a 3.3 GPA.

Tycho Streigel: “Here at Ballard, it is known as “Tycho Time!” He is a 3 year Varsity player, and a 2 year starter that made an immediate impact. Most importantly, Tycho is a great human being that cares about his community,”
-Coach Broom, Head Boys’ Basketball Coach.

In addition to varsity basketball, Tycho was a standout tennis player earning three varsity letters. He will attend Seattle University in the fall and graduates with a 3.7 GPA.

Maizie Clark : “Maisie was a constant source of motivation for our team as her work ethic and positive attitude made everyone want to give her best.”
-Brad Baker, Head Girls’ Basketball Coach

Maisie was a four year varsity basketball player and participated in lacrosse for four years as well. She will attend Santa Clara in the fall and graduates with a 3.99 GPA!

Sarah Payne : “A coach's player. Good focus, high work rate, committed, talented and positive. What more can you ask for? Sarah will be missed but I know she will have a positive successful future. Wait and see....”
-Sam Maccarrone, BHS Head Girls’ soccer coach.

While at Ballard Sarah earned five varsity letters and finishes her high school career with a 3.9 GPA. She will attend the University of Washington next year to study biology.

Maddy Angelos: “Maddy's leadership and integrity not only helped our team but will be skills that she can apply well beyond Ballard High School."
-Brad Baker, Head Girls’ Basketball Coach

A three year varsity basketball player and two year track athlete, Maddy was also heavily involved is ASB. Maddy is graduating with a 3.9 GPA and will attend Pace University in New York next year to study arts and entertainment management.

NEW BHS COACHES NEXT YEAR
I would also like to announce the hiring of two new head coaches for next year. Former Ballard student-athlete Neil Howard will officially take over our cross country program. Coach Howard was our interim head coach last fall and he is also our head track and field coach. Coach Howard has been with the program for many years and I’m sure will continue the excellence of our program for years to come. I’m also pleased to announce the hiring of our new head volleyball coach, Jody Myers, a BHS assistant coach last year and an-building teacher. Coach Myers played volleyball for the University of Texas – San Antonio and we are lucky to have her!

FALL SPORTS
The question that everyone is asking is what will sports look like moving forward. We did receive some good news from the WIAA yesterday that they do anticipate fall sports happening. With that being said we also know that a school’s athletic participation will ultimately be determined by which phase the county that the school is in, as laid out by Governor Inslee. More information will be passed along to the Ballard HS community as soon we know more.

GOODBYE SENIORS
I know we all agree our seniors lost out on so much this year, and that was especially true for our senior spring athletes who didn’t get that last chance to compete in high school athletics. After all the disappointment over the last three months it was really nice to see so many smiling faces this week as our seniors came through for a final good bye to BHS athletics to turn in that lost JVC jersey from freshman year, pick up a senior scholar-athlete honor cord for those who qualified, and to get the final stamp of approval from the athletic department required to check out. (in case you’re wondering, over 90% of our senior student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher). It was awesome hearing about the future plans of our student athletes as they get ready to disperse to various colleges across the country, and a reminder that we will get back to normal someday.

Please take a few minutes to watch the Senior Spring Athlete video tribute that SPS helped us put together.
Have a great summer and stay safe!
