Greetings,
We've had an energizing Homecoming Weekend at the College of Law, including the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards and reception, the Alumna of the Year Award ceremony, a host of class-specific reunions, and our Red & Blue BBQ before Saturday's football game.
|
Friday evening we presented the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Awards,
followed by our
all-alumni reception.
|
We are grateful to each one of you who came home to the University of Arizona campus and the College of Law to reconnect with your fellow Wildcats ... and dogs.
And by the way, what a game!
Until the footnotes,
Marc

Puig's Scholarship on Foreign Investment Law Featured in Leading International Law Journal
Sergio Puig, associate professor of law and director of the
International Trade and Business Law program at University of Arizona Law, authored the lead article in the
American Journal of International Law, Volume 112, Issue 3.
The article, "Imperfect Alternatives: Institutional Choice and the Reform of Investment Law," (co-authored with University of California Irvine professor Gregory Shaffer) was also selected as the focus of the journal's supplemental Unbound publication, which features short essays from scholars responding to the article. (Read the article here.)
International investment treaties and foreign investment laws are undergoing massive reform worldwide, and the article offers an in-depth analysis of the available alternatives that nations are considering for enforcing their provisions.
The article uses a novel methodology to evaluate these alternatives by applying comparative institutional analysis to the six main options available to governments. Puig and Shaffer examine what each option entails in terms of cost and benefits among three dimensions: peace, efficiency and fairness.
"Few areas of international law are as controversial and unsettling as foreign investment law," Puig says. "Our goal with this work is to advance the necessary discussion that is already taking shape with various ongoing international negotiations." He says the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, sometimes referred to as NAFTA 2.0, exemplifies this trend.

Global Programs Director and 2018 Alum Team Up to Speak With Prospective Students in Chile
On October 26,
Amanda Wolfe, Director of Global Programs, was joined by 2018 JD alum
Francisco Ortiz at a recruitment event in his hometown of Santiago, Chile. The event was sponsored by Education USA and Fulbright. Amanda says, "Francisco did a great job of explaining to prospective students why the UA is the best choice for them for either the LLM or JD for foreign-trained lawyers!"

I'm grateful to the over 350 alumni, students, faculty, and friends of Arizona Law who came home to the UA campus over the weekend to celebrate the Wildcats and our college.
Let's do it again at next year's Homecoming -- save the date, October 25 and 26, 2019!
