Save the Date:

Homecoming & Reunion Weekend

Greetings,

Over the summer months, our Senior Director of Development Megan O’Leary and I connected—in person!—with some of our alumni in Los Angeles, San Diego, Reno, and Honolulu. We are planning travel to Las Vegas and Washington, DC, early this fall.

Our legal community and our alumni community are stepping up to support our $6 million fundraising effort, “A New Day in Court,” to enhance our advocacy program. Our latest exciting gift in this effort comes from Phoenix-based law firm Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart, featured below.

All our alumni, near and far, are invited to attend the next session of LawCats Live on August 27. This is our monthly zoom webinar series—begun during the pandemic, and a rousing success—featuring faculty scholarship and hot topics. The session on the 27th will be presented by Arizona Law Regents Professor Rebecca Tsosie and Lohse Fellow Darrah Blackwater (‘20). You can see past LawCats Live recordings on our website.

We hope you will also save the date for this year’s Homecoming and Reunion festivities, scheduled for November 4-6, 2021. There will be several opportunities to gather as a community and celebrate. You can find out more in this edition.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart Contributes $50,000 to University of Arizona Law Courtroom Rebuild

Beale-Micheaels-Slack-Shughart_photo_WEB.png

The Phoenix-based law firm Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart, P.C. has made a $50,000 donation to the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law in support of the college’s $6 million “A New Day in Court” initiative to significantly reconstruct student courtrooms and expand the advocacy program.

When construction is completed, students will work from the Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart Plaintiff’s Table, an upgraded space in the college’s new Kevin R. Boyle Trial Courtroom.

University of Arizona Law has outgrown its current courtrooms, which were built in 1977. Through this initiative, we will create fully functional, state-of-the-art spaces that give students a proper courtroom setting in which to learn and practice. The college’s advocacy program will also be renamed to the Thomas Mauet Advocacy Program, in honor of Professor Emeritus and renowned trial expert Thomas Mauet.

“It is a privilege for our firm to support the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and the ‘A New Day in Court’ Initiative,” said David S. Shughart, one of the firm’s partners and a 1993 University of Arizona Law graduate. “University of Arizona Law has a history of graduating outstanding trial lawyers, and this exciting project will provide future students with a state-of-the-art facility and the best possible trial advocacy training.”

Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart, P.C. specializes in personal injury and wrongful death litigation, and the firm’s attorneys have recovered more than $300 million on behalf of clients by way of jury awards or settlements. Founding partner Michael Beale is also a University of Arizona Law alumnus (Class of 1968).

“I’m thrilled that future Arizona Law students will benefit from Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart joining us in reimagining our advocacy program,” said Ted Schmidt (’77), a member of the “A New Day in Court” steering committee. “High-caliber alumni like David Shughart and Michael Beale are critical to our success and the future of advocacy at Arizona Law. Equally important, it says volumes about the character of John Micheaels and Thom Slack, who are not Arizona alumni yet generously support the education of new trial lawyers in such a meaningful way.”

The Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart gift brings the total amount raised for the initiative up to $1.3 million. For more information on the effort, including fundraising goals and how to participate, visit law.arizona.edu/court or contact Senior Director of Development Megan O’Leary.

Our Arizona Law alumni and friends do so much to educate, engage, employ, and support the next generation of lawyers. That commitment is reflected in the generous gift from the firm of Beale, Micheaels, Slack & Shughart. And it is embodied in the leadership of alumnus Ted Schmidt on our “A New Day in Court” initiative. Thank you.

Today is a thrilling day at Arizona Law. This morning we welcomed the new class of JD and other graduate law students—from across the United States, and around the world. These are the students whose success your support, engagement, and mentoring enable.

I look forward to telling you more about the new class in the weeks to come and, as opportunities arise, to introducing you to them.

Warmly,
