When and why did you decide to study law?
I decided to study law last fall. I was a math teacher at a Title 1 public high school in Mesa, Arizona, for three years. When the pandemic hit, my school faced challenges it never expected. Instead of trying to determine how students were going to meet state standards, my school was focused on challenges such how to get food to students who relied on schools for meals and how to help students who were being abused at home when they were not attending in-person classes. It became apparent during the pandemic that schools were responsible for much more than a child’s education. As a teacher, there was not much I could do to help my students on a systemic level. I figured the best way to advocate for them was to go to law school.
Why did you choose the UA for law school?
I chose UA for law school because I want to serve my community here in Arizona. I was born and raised in Arizona and have no intention of leaving.
What are you enjoying most about the Arizona Law experience so far?
So far, I have enjoyed getting to know my peers and professors. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind. As I continue on, I am looking forward to joining some of the clubs and organizations the college has. I have been to a few of the informational meetings and now the hard part is deciding which ones to join. They all have so much to offer!
What are your career goals?
I know I want to help people and advocate for my community. I know that I am interested in education policy but am open as to where I end up.
Any scholarships to recognize?
I would like to thank the Dean's Achievement Scholarship. When considering coming to law school, funding was a major concern for me. Attending law school without the scholarship would have been much more difficult.
What else should we know about you?
I have a cat named Little Potato Dumpling and I love board games.
