Constitution Day 2021: A Conversation with Judge David Barron

Greetings,

The College of Law and the University of Arizona are in high gear.

Our 1Ls—like Jordan Young, featured in this edition—and our returning students are deeply involved in their coursework and student groups.

In-person and online events populate the Arizona Law calendar. Be sure to make room in your own calendar to join us for UA in DC, the Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life speaker series (details below), and Constitution Day—and that’s just this month!

In addition, if you know of someone who would be a good candidate for our Legal Paraprofessional Certificate, please encourage them to attend our virtual information session next week.

Until the footnotes,

Marc

Meet New Arizona Law JD Student Jordan Young

Jordan lighten_crop.jpg

Name: Jordan Young

Hometown: Phoenix, AZ

Year: 1L

Undergraduate/graduate institution: ASU bachelor's in marketing

and master's in secondary education

When and why did you decide to study law?

I decided to study law last fall. I was a math teacher at a Title 1 public high school in Mesa, Arizona, for three years. When the pandemic hit, my school faced challenges it never expected. Instead of trying to determine how students were going to meet state standards, my school was focused on challenges such how to get food to students who relied on schools for meals and how to help students who were being abused at home when they were not attending in-person classes. It became apparent during the pandemic that schools were responsible for much more than a child’s education. As a teacher, there was not much I could do to help my students on a systemic level. I figured the best way to advocate for them was to go to law school.

Why did you choose the UA for law school?

I chose UA for law school because I want to serve my community here in Arizona. I was born and raised in Arizona and have no intention of leaving.

What are you enjoying most about the Arizona Law experience so far?

So far, I have enjoyed getting to know my peers and professors. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind. As I continue on, I am looking forward to joining some of the clubs and organizations the college has. I have been to a few of the informational meetings and now the hard part is deciding which ones to join. They all have so much to offer!

What are your career goals?

I know I want to help people and advocate for my community. I know that I am interested in education policy but am open as to where I end up.

Any scholarships to recognize?

I would like to thank the Dean's Achievement Scholarship. When considering coming to law school, funding was a major concern for me. Attending law school without the scholarship would have been much more difficult.

What else should we know about you?

I have a cat named Little Potato Dumpling and I love board games.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

PCLP Series on Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life

This fall, Arizona Law and our Program in Criminal Law and Policy (PCLP) are hosting the Prosecutorial Ethics in Real Life speaker series, beginning today with Justin Oshana.

Under the leadership of professor of practice and former U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Paul Charlton ('88), the series is part of an ongoing effort at Arizona Law to create a national forum for discussion of critical and timely ethical issues in criminal prosecution.

Justin Oshana, TODAY September 15

Please join us today at 12 noon (Tucson/Arizona time) for a presentation by Justin Oshana. Oshana was the lead Army prosecutor in United States v. Bergdahl, the court-martial of Private Bowe Bergdahl for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. He also was a defense attorney in United States v. Hasan, the capital court-martial of Major Nidal Hasan for the 2009 Fort Hood shootings. Oshana is currently an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and a Major in the Army Reserves.

This event will be presented in person at the College of Law and also streamed for remote viewing.
