Faculty & Staff,

I heard the sad news this past week of the passing of Dr. Dale Nitzschke, Southeast Missouri State University’s 16th president.

During his three years as president of SEMO, the University experienced impressive advancement in how and where education was delivered. The Sikeston Area Higher Education Center was opened and a location identified for the Kennet Area Higher Education Center, both now SEMO regional campuses. The University began development of SEE-NET, a regional telecommunications network for delivery of instruction and installed high-technology computerized classrooms available to each college.

During his tenure, SEMO created a Polytechnic Institute, completed expansion of the Student Recreation Center, completed construction of Robert A. Dempster Hall, and completed a multi-million renovation of what is now Carnahan Hall. The University also secured funding to develop the historic St. Vincent Seminary into the River Campus to house a proposed School of the Visual and Performing Arts, which now houses our Holland College of Arts and Media.

Dr. Nitzschke’s leadership had a great impact on shaping the SEMO we know today. I am certain the SEMO community joins me in recognizing these contributions that continue to benefit our students, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Sincerely,

Carlos Vargas, President
