Friends and Families:

Last week as a parish we did what we had not done in ten weeks. We gathered to celebrate mass! We were not comfortably in our homes, unshaven and wearing robes looking at a small screen. While were wearing masks and sitting apart we were still praying all together for the first time in ten weeks.

As the presider I have to say it was at once joyful and muted, as well as familiar and strangely different. There was gladness in being back as people clapped at the beginning of mass. There was a somber feel as the musicians played but could not invite people to sing and greeters welcomed parishioners from behind masks.
As a parish we could not gather for 3 weeks of Lent, Holy Week, Easter Sunday and then most of the Easter season. We could only watch those celebrations lived streamed from our empty church.  But our gathering together last week had the feel of hope; if not yet fully realized. Behind our masks and warm greetings we still felt like “church” once again. It was a good beginning!
