Letter to our community:

First, I want to express my gratitude to our town officials, county officials, and Monroe County Library System Director, Patty Uttaro for their leadership and guidance as we continue to evaluate and adjust library operations as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As you likely heard, yesterday, the State and County issued additional measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, including a County declaration of a State of Emergency resulting in closures of public schools and many other institutions. As County Executive, Adam Bello stated, “this is not a time for panic, but a time to work together to keep our community safe. Wash your hands, practice social distancing, and stay home if sick.” We have been working round-the-clock to assess what that guidance means for the library. After much discussion, and in accordance with public health guidance, The Gates Public Library has been called upon to support the County and State’s efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. We all must do our part to keep our community and region healthy and combat the further spread of COVID-19. As County Public Health Commissioner, Dr. Mendoza stated, "The most important way to combat fear is with facts." As a community leader of information and resources, here is a list of resources the Gates Public Library recommends:

Effective tomorrow Monday, March 16, The Gates Public Library will close for public entry and assembly until further notice.  This decision was made in partnership with the town and Library Board of Trustees, and please know we did not take the decision lightly.

It is clear that now is the time for decisive action in order to protect the public we serve every day, as well as our staff and volunteers, who have been going above and beyond to continue providing service over the last several days as this public health crisis has taken hold. We will continue to monitor and assess the situation and adjust services accordingly.

For those of you who have borrowed Library materials in your possession, need not worry of due dates and fines – we are working to extend loan periods at this time.

For those of you who interact with our wonderful staff, please note that we are looking at ways of utilizing their talents during this time in order to continue to serve our community as best we can.

We will continue to communicate with you as our response to this outbreak evolves and look forward to welcoming you back into the Gates Public Library when our communities begin to reconvene. Until then, for updates, please follow the Library on  Facebook and Instagram, sign up for our email newsletter , and visit us at  gateslibrary.org  to take advantage of  digital resources  available to you. The following apps are available to library patrons for accessing movies, music, magazines, ebooks and audiobooks.

  • Hoopla - a streaming video service for Gates residents that offers thousands of popular movies, TV shows, music, graphic novels, and ebooks.
  • Libby by Overdrive - offers tens of thousands of popular titles for free
Be kind, stay positive, and be part of the solution. We will all get through this together.
