NLLD Director Shares Post-Hurricane Ida Update with CPRA at Meeting in Thibodaux
NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois presented a post-Hurricane Ida update at the LA Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) meeting on October 20 at Nicholls State University. South Lafourche Levee District General Manager Windell Curole and Terrebonne Levee District Executive Director Reggie Dupre also provided updates.

All three levee directors spoke about specific damages the levees incurred during Hurricane Ida, damages and flooding inside and outside of the levee systems, and improvements that continue to be needed within each district and to the regional Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection System. As they explained, most of these improvements were already underway before Hurricane Ida made landfall.

Although our region was not completely spared from flooding and damage, CPRA Chairman Chip Kline complimented the directors on their hard work and efforts over the years and during Hurricane Ida that prevented more extensive flooding in Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes. The levee directors also noted the CRPA's tremendous work and accomplishments that have made the completion of flood protection projects possible in our region to combat hurricanes like Ida and major storms in the future.
ALBL President Discusses Impacts of National Flood Insurance Program Revisions
Cory Kief, president of the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana (ALBL) and NLLD president, presented several important updates to the CPRA Board. Included in his updates was the ALBL’s position on the new rating system for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that is now being implemented by FEMA.

Risk Rating 2.0 (RR 2.0) will drastically increase flood insurance rates for many homeowners in South Louisiana to unaffordable levels, resulting in loss of coverage and decreases in home values. Cory Kief shared that the ALBL strongly opposes the problematic components of RR 2.0 and ALBL will fight the new FEMA rating system with a request to the State AG to take legal action.

The NLLD invites residents to contact our office with any questions regarding the new flood insurance rate increases imposed as a result of RR 2.0.
Curole receives an Honorary Doctor of Science
At the same CPRA meeting, Nicholls State University President Dr. Jay Clune presented Windell Curole, general manager of NLLD’s neighboring South Lafourche Levee District, with an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the university. NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois said the award given to Windell Curole is well-deserved! Congratulations, Windell!
