Resilience, Trauma, and Relationships
This month's meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 22nd, from 5:30pm-7pm, and Saturday, September 26th, from 11:30am-1pm. The meeting topic will be Resilience, Trauma, and Relationships led by Elaine Spicer. She received her Masters Degree from IUPUI and has worked in the field of Social Work for the past 35 years. She worked as a therapist in private practice for the past 10 years after working for agencies and schools, in Tippecanoe County and NW Indiana. Elaine has worked with foster and adoptive families for many of those years. She learned about trauma and its effects on the brain and behavior, 8 or so years ago. Around the same time, she learned about the ACEs study and the work of Dr. Robert Anda and Dr. Vincint Felitti. It has profoundly affected the way that she see people, in general, and views behavior of both children and adults. Elaine believes strongly that being trauma-informed is NOT enough. We must be trauma sensitive and trauma responsive if we are to truly help children, adults, and families. She recently formed the Institute for Community and Family Resilience, a non-profit with the mission to provide education, training, consultation and support to the systems (e.g. education, law enforcement, juvenile justice, courts, health, and local government) that serve adults, families and children in our community.

There are a number of ways you can access the online monthly meeting. To access it on your smartphone, go to either the Apple App Store or the Android Google Play store and download the free Zoom Cloud Meetings app. If you are using a computer, simply click on the link to the meeting and you'll be instructed how to download the meeting software. If you do not have a smartphone or a computer or are uncomfortable with video conferencing you can also simply dial into the meeting using one of the numbers below. Please note that these meetings are now password protected for everyone's privacy.

To RSVP for one of the meetings, please respond to the text you received with either Tuesday or Saturday. Just a reminder, you must attend one of the two meetings to stay active in the program.

Meet Our New E-Learning and Out-of-School Time Navigator!
I am so excited to join the Lake Area United Way team as the E-Learning and Out-of-School Time Navigator! In my role, I will be helping families thrive by assisting them with finding high quality child care and e-learning programming that fits their family needs. I am truly looking forward to working with the Level Up participants. Prior to joining the LAUW team, I worked as a School Counselor for 17 years. I have worked with students and families in grades K-12 in a variety of school settings in Illinois. During that time, I was passionate about helping students find the “best fit” for post-secondary training and so working with the Level Up program is very exciting for me. I’m married and have two energetic boys, ages three and eight who keep me very busy outside of my working hours.
Success Story
United Way is helping families thrive by providing access to livable wage jobs by providing training opportunities. This is an exciting month for the Manufacturing training group. They completed certifications in OSHA and forklift operations. This group completed their forklift training in the rain on September 12, 2020. They worked as a team and helped to motivate one another through this process. Now the class is journeying forward together to complete the other four certifications left. This training is one of the ways United Way is helping families thrive.
