Dear Friends,

Check out the recent news below from the Lexington Council for the Arts (LCA).

NOVEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

44 APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED TO LCA FOR LCC GRANTS

The Lexington Council for the Arts (LCA) received $9,100 from the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) under its Local Cultural Council (LCC) Grant Program to be used to award grants for community-based arts & culture projects.

LCA is delighted to report that this October we received 44 grant applications, 10 of which were from Lexington applicants, for the MCC/LCC grants that we will be awarding.

LCA will evaluate applications in terms of several review criteria: artistic or creative merit; benefit to the cultural life of Lexington; project design; qualifications, dedication and accomplishments of the individuals and organizations involved; accessibility of the program and of facilities being used; community involvement; and financial need.

Priority will be given to programs that benefit the broadest possible range of Lexington residents and to applicants who are based in Lexington. Also of interest is first-time funding of programs and emerging artists or organizations that have demonstrated artistic merit.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

Fairy Homes and Gardens: Lexington and Bikeway Colonies

Fairy houses are small, whimsical outdoor dwellings for fairies to live in, ranging from simple houses made from natural materials to elaborate mansions made of metal or plaster of paris.

LCA is proposing that Town organizations and community members work together, drawing on their different talents, using the various outdoor areas in Lexington to hold a spring weekend-long fairy-themed event called Fairy Homes and Gardens: Lexington.

To spearhead the project, LCA will mount a public art installation called Bikeway Colonies, which will involve placing small homes crafted by local artists in trees along the Bikeway. These could be some of the fairy homes created in the Fairy Homes project earlier in 2022, newly crafted fairy homes, or pieces of art commissioned from local artists with themes that relate to local architecture. The example below is of birdhouses that reflect different architectural styles.

The purpose of the project will be to engage the community in a creative enterprise, provide works of art that can be enjoyed outdoors, and support local artists. One fun wrinkle to the project could be to include a scavenger hunt for fairies throughout Town shops.
