An update from us on our summer programming and the Town Pool during the COVID-19 pandemic

Lexington Recreation & Community Programs would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in recent months as we have all been navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, our staff has been working diligently to plan fun and safe summer programming options for you and your family. As always, ensuring the safety and well-being of our participants and their families, our staff, and the entire Lexington community has been paramount in our planning and at the forefront of our minds. As you might expect, our plans keep evolving as we keep up with current best practices, striving to minimize the risks associated with COVID-19 in our programs. As outlined below, there will be significant impacts on our summer programming. We remain optimistic that we will be able to offer a select number of in-person opportunities this summer
.
- Summer Camps & Programs - After much consideration and deliberation, the decision has been made to cancel all previously scheduled camps, clinics, and programs. This includes our day camps (Discover the Fun and Teddy Bear Picnic), Minuteman Sports Clinics, tennis programs, vendor sports camps, and S.T.E.A.M. programs at the Community Center. Please know that this was an extremely difficult decision, but ultimately, our belief is that this is the correct one at this point in time. People who registered for any of these programs will receive a program credit in the full amount of the registration fee. This credit may be applied by anyone in your household towards our future programs.
- Summer 2020 - Take 2! (relaunch of summer registration) - While our previously scheduled camps and programs have been cancelled, we are cautiously optimistic that we can provide a safe opportunity for youth while adhering to the new safety protocols. Staff is moving forward with planning for a limited number of modified, in-person programs this summer. While the exact program details are still being determined, in-person programs are tentatively scheduled to operate for four weeks from July 20th-August 14th. In addition to in-person programs, our department will continue to offer a robust selection of virtual opportunities now and throughout the entire summer. If you previously registered your child for one of our summer programs, you will need to re-register your child to secure a spot in the new programs! Since our summer programs are being completely redeveloped, registration for all of our new in-person and virtual programs will launch on Monday, June 15th! The details for all of these programs will be finalized within the next week, so be sure to check our Summer 2020 web page for more information!
- Town Pool - As is the case with our summer camps and programs, our #1 priority at the Town Pool is the safety and well-being of all patrons and staff. There is also a series of fixed costs associated with operating the facility each season in addition to the wages for our seasonal staff. With the opening of the season already being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff worked tirelessly to come up with a modified schedule that would be sustainable financially. Unfortunately, for every one of the several options that were under consideration, the financial projections revealed that the facility would operate at a substantial deficit this summer. As a result, on Tuesday, June 2nd, the Recreation Committee voted unanimously to keep the Irving H. Mabee Town Pool Complex closed to the public for the 2020 season. A credit will be issued to anyone who already purchased a membership and we look forward to having you back at the Town Pool for the 2021 season!
- Communication – Our website is always the most up-to-date resource. As our plans for the summer and beyond continue to evolve, we will keep you informed every step of the way! Our web page Summer 2020 Programs & Activities as well as LexRec Reopen contains information about the phased reopening plan for our programs, services, facilities, and infrastructure. If you cannot find what you are looking for on our website, please reach out to us directly at recdept@lexingtonma.gov. As always, we thank you for your continued support, especially during this challenging time and we look forward to serving you this summer!
