Hello Christine,
Healthy Body. Healthy Bones!
I had to lay super still and not move a muscle. I was allowed to breath regularly but that was it Dr. Chai explained. She went on to say that the table would move and make weird buzzing, beeping a whirring sounds and a large arm would scan over my whole body and then over just my wrist and hip. She said "Don't worry! Everything will be ok!"
This was my experience when I went for a DXA scan for a study at the University of Delaware to test my bone health. I recently completed a tart cherry juice study for women's health and as soon as that was over I was asked to come for a screening for the another study about bone health. I'm really interested in not only helping with the research but in knowing if I am experiencing some bone loss. Dr Chai explained to me that as women go through menopause we naturally lose bone density because we aren't producing estrogen anymore. It's important that we maintain strong bones as we age. I asked her about lifting weights, Yoga, and weight bearing activities and she said that YES! These are all very important things we can do to help our bones to stay healthy and strong.
After the scan I went to another room to answer some questionnaires. While I was filling them out the doctor came in and let me know that I am eligible for the study! YAY! ... Wait--I mean Boo! That means my bones are lower density and may be weaker. The good news is that I don't have osteoporosis. This study is to help prevent bone loss and improve bone density by taking resveratrol and other supplements. I am not able to see the DXA scan report yet until the whole study is over in 6 months.
I wanted to put this in the message today to encourage any woman who is postmenopausal (1-10 years) to consider being a part of this study. See the information on how to participate below.
