Hello Christine,
A self-Awareness lesson from the Road!
The holidays are upon us!
On Saturday I took a trip to my boyfriend's aunt's sons wife's mothers Shoppe in Elverson, PA called Painted Table Designs. I went there last year for the first time for holiday gift shopping and loved it. Such a cute shoppe with gifts for everyone. I mostly got things for myself! LOL!
The shoppe is over an hour away and as I set out on the back roads I saw a sign that said "Beware of aggressive drivers!" Just the fact that that sign was there was a little disturbing to me but, of course, we all know there are plenty of aggressive drivers on the road so I was on the lookout for these aggressive drivers. Very quickly I encountered one. Someone sped past me passing on a double yellow line!
A little while later I heard a sound that sounded a lot like a horn "hhhhhhooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkkk!" I thought "That can't be a horn. It's probably an alarm from a nearby house or something", but sure enough, it was another aggressive driver just laying on the horn. That kind of horn honking I feel is unnecessary. A horn is to 1) warn someone of imminent danger, 2) a quick toot to remind someone to go when the light turns green or 3) to beep at a friend you see walking down Main Street so you can wave!! ;-)
One of the best ways we can notice how much inner calm we possess is noticing how we respond on the road. However we are showing up in the world / our natural state, shows up on the road. Maybe we had a rough day and we are taking it out on the drivers on the road or we might be an impatient person and whenever someone is a slow driver we immediately get annoyed. We may label everyone as an idiot!
I have come up with some solutions/ remedies to help me to show up on the road like I'd like to show up in life---with calm, understanding and patience. For example, when someone in front of me is driving slowly I make up a story about what must be going on in that car like the wife is saying "Oh Harold, look at that beautiful house. Slow way down so we can really look at it!" OR if someone is aggressively passing me I think "they must be in a hurry". Also, I have noticed the two types of drivers who respond to your turn signal to change lanes. One is the type who will let you in and the other is the type who won't. That's it. You can just notice which type they are without irritation or anger. When traffic is super slow we can just practice patience and know that the situation is out of our control to change it.
When we have tools to manage when challenges come up on the highway that can translate to our lives when difficult situations arise. We don't have to be aggressive. We can practice patience, self awareness and self control. We can take some deep breaths to calm and relax out bodies.
This time of year and the business of the holiday season, let's use our yoga practices to be more understanding, patient and kind. Let's remember that if we can practice this kindness on the roads, we can practice it in our lives.
