KLSD Learning Cafe on October 28 at 7 PM
Dear KLSD Community,

Please consider joining us in the John Jay Middle School dining room at 7:00 pm on Monday, October 28, for a conversation about why the Indians mascot has been a conversation in our District since the late 1980s, why it is again today, and how we can move forward together. Please read my October 18th letter to district families in order to know where the current conversation stands.

For those who have not attended a Learning Café in the past, these evenings provide opportunities for community members to speak in small groups with other district residents, as well as with KLSD faculty members and administrators. Typically, there are a few rounds of discussion in which participants speak in response to a question or prompt before changing groups. It’s a great way to hear many voices in a relatively short period of time.

We ask that you RSVP with this link by the end of the day on Friday, October 25th so that we can plan accordingly.

Books as Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Doors
While Increase Miller, Katonah, and Meadow Pond’s libraries are replenished each year, there is a new focus on adding books that represent a variety of cultures and points of view. This reflects the steadily increasing number of diverse children’s books being published as well as Katonah-Lewisboro’s commitment to providing students access to them.

Middle School Focuses on Healthy Choices for Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week is about focusing on healthy choices. All Katonah-Lewisboro schools participate in age-appropriate ways.

Middle school students watched and discussed videos featuring positive role models sharing their stories and deliberate choices to live life to the fullest.

School Social Worker Ray DiStephan visited tables during lunch to talk to students about making positive decisions.
One-of-a-Kind Course Uses Ward Pound Ridge as Classroom
The Senior Research Seminar in Environmental Studies—known as Wilderness—is a learning experience unique to John Jay High School. Students spend three class periods every other day exploring Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.

Wilderness is one of over thirty electives, an array that includes Astronomy, Forensics, and the History of NYC.
