Calling All Civ. Pro. Superheros!

One of the first things that struck me when I started working with pro se litigants at KCLL was that many folks were operating in a vacuum with no real sense of the how the litigation process works or why. It occurred to me that pro ses could really use an introductory civil procedure class. To that end, the law library joined forces with fabulous volunteer attorney Jeff Cowan in 2018 to create the class, Civil Litigation without Tears: The Basics of Representing Yourself in Court. While the class might be more accurately called Civil Litigation with Fewer Tears, it was a 90-minute dive into the court rules, deadlines, and procedures that pro ses are most likely to encounter.

AI Skeptics with Cathy O’Neil & Jake Appel

This podcast is hosted by Cathy O’Neil and Jake Appel, both AI experts. Cathy is the CEO of ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing firm. She has a Ph.D. in math from Harvard and has written extensively on AI in the real world. Jake is the Chief Strategist at ORCAA and holds a BS in mathematics and an MPA from Princeton. He also has coauthored several books on economics and field research. The podcast features a variety of guests discussing current AI issues. Several focus on the use of AI in the legal system by judges, attorneys, and others. It has a great variety of topics that are relevant to everyone who lives in our world.

Cate's Bites: Adventures in Eating in Downtown Seattle

This month’s featured eatery takes us to Rojo’s Mexican Food. Rojo’s is a delightful plant based Mexican restaurant located on James St. and 3rd Ave. They have a variety of offerings from burritos to tacos to rice and beans. They also have a lovely selection of Agua Frescas. During my visits I’ve had both their Horchata and Jamaica Agua Frescas. The Horchata is creamy with a nice kick of cinnamon and not too sweet, while their Jamaica is tart and fruity with just the right touch of sweetness.

Court Preparation Tips by Washington Courts

The Washington Courts website has a great resource for helping you prepare for your trial. The Court Preparation Tips offers tips on looking at the big picture of your case, getting legal help, preparing for a court proceeding, preparing for your day in court, and information on Disability Accommodations. There is also a very helpful video at the bottom of the webpage that explains how to connect to your virtual hearing. If you are representing yourself in court this is a wonderful tool to help alleviate some of the worry about going to court.
