CaseStrainer: Help with Hallucinations

For the last several years we’ve been regularly reading about lawyers getting into hot water by citing AI-generated hallucinated cases to courts. In a recent federal court case in the Northern District of Mississippi, lawyers from both sides were removed from the Withers v. City of Aberdeen case and fined for citing AI-generated fake cases in court filings. While Withers seems to be the high-water mark for egregious AI-generated submissions so far, lawyers with egg on their face from playing fast and loose with AI has become all too common. In this column, I talk to Jonathan Franklin who, in his role as Digital Innovation Librarian at the UW Law School, developed CaseStrainer, a tool to help discover hallucinated cases in legal documents.

Strict Scrutiny Podcast

Our featured SMR is Strict Scrutiny, a podcast hosted by three amazingly talented women, Melissa Murray, Leah Litman, and Kate Shaw. The podcast focuses on the intertwining of politics, the law and the U.S. Supreme Court. All three women are wonderfully funny constitutional law professors at three of the top law schools in the country. The hosts don’t hold back when it comes to analyzing the latest legal decisions. They also have bonus episodes whenever SCOTUS releases opinions. Murray, Litman, and Shaw are great to listen to while commuting to work or kayaking around the Sound.

This month’s featured eatery takes us to TOASTED, a new addition to the Pioneer Square area. TOASTED has a variety of bagels, sandwiches, coffees, teas, and more with a Mediterranean spin. Throughout their menu you can see the influence of their roots from their inclusion of Za’atar and Harissa to their pairings of Labneh and dates in their dishes. I tried the Date & Labneh bagel which stars with a Medjool date spread base topped with a Turkish labneh, walnuts za’atar and a drizzle of olive oil.
